Biomass and Cellulose Dissolution-The Important Issue in Renewable Materials Treatment

Marta Przypis et al.

Summary: The focus on sustainable development and the circular bioeconomy has generated significant interest in the efficient utilization of biomass as a raw material. However, the solubility of lignocellulose or its ingredients is a crucial issue for the transition to bio-based resources. This review explores the latest research on biomass dissolution, emphasizing the use of environmentally friendly solvents such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. The impact of solvent composition and structure on the process of cellulose dissolution, as well as novel approaches involving inorganic salts and specific metal complexes, are also discussed.

Dissolution of Silk Fibroin in Mixtures of Ionic Liquids and Dimethyl Sulfoxide: On the Relative Importance of Temperature and Binary Solvent Composition

Omar A. El Seoud et al.

Summary: The dependence of silk fibroin dissolution in mixtures of DMSO with ionic liquids on temperature and DMSO mole fraction was studied. Design of experiments was used to determine the relationship between mass fraction of dissolved silk fibroin and temperature and DMSO mole fraction. The results showed that different ionic liquids have different effects on silk fibroin dissolution.

Ion-specific binding of cations to the carboxylate and of anions to the amide of alanylalanine

Carola Sophie Krevert et al.

Summary: Studies on the ion-specific effects on oligopeptides have contributed to our understanding of Hofmeister effects on proteins. However, the use of different model peptides and experimental sensitivities has led to conflicting conclusions. In this study, the authors investigate the impact of different ions on a small model peptide, L-Alanyl-L-alanine (2Ala), and uncover the mechanisms behind the ion-peptide interactions. The results provide insights into the preferential interaction sites of ions on the peptide and help rationalize the Hofmeister effects on proteins.

Understanding cellulose dissolution in ionic liquid-dimethyl sulfoxide binary mixtures: Quantification of the relative importance of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions

Omar A. El Seoud et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dissolution of microcrystalline cellulose in mixtures of DMSO with ILs, revealing that multi-parameter correlations can quantify the importance of cellulose-solvent interactions. The results indicate that an efficient cellulose solvent should disrupt the hydrogen bonding within cellulose and hydrophobic interactions caused by the biopolymer's amphiphilic nature.

Dissolution of Cellulose in Ionic Liquid-DMSO Mixtures: Roles of DMSO/IL Ratio and the Cation Alkyl Chain Length

Fei Ren et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that longer alkyl chains of IL cations led to stronger interaction between ILs and cellulose, resulting in higher cellulose solubility in DMSO/IL mixtures with increased viscosity. Shorter alkyl chains of IL cations, on the other hand, favored cellulose dissolution at a 1:1 ratio. This new knowledge could potentially contribute to the development of more cost-effective solvent systems for biopolymers.
