Inheritance relationship between Zhanggongxiang kiln celadon and Ru Guan celadon: Comments on the rationality of Raman Ip value evaluating firing temperature

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: The development of Chinese ceramics reached its peak during the Song dynasty, with the emergence of exquisite celadon works. The Zhanggongxiang kiln, believed to be the official kiln of the Northern Song dynasty, has attracted scholarly attention for its celadon. This study investigates the inheritance relationship between Zhanggongxiang celadon and Ru Guan celadon in the firing process using laser Raman spectrum and thermal expansion methods. It also reviews the rationality of using Raman I-p value to evaluate the firing temperature of ceramics, concluding that the firing temperature of Zhanggongxiang celadon varies with glaze color, while the firing technology is inherited from Ru Guan porcelain. The study also finds that the I-p value of glaze cannot accurately evaluate the firing temperature of porcelain with similar firing temperature.

Morphology and Structure Characteristics of the Rare Black-Glazed Porcelains Excavated from the Jian Kiln Site of Song Dynasty

Shiqian Tao et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-technique analysis was conducted on three rare types of Jian tea bowls. The tea-dust-glazed ware was found to have a high-temperature iron-based crystalline glaze, while the grey-glazed ware was fired at a lower temperature in the dragon kiln. The pearl-glazed ware was fired through a secondary glazing process. The results provide guidance for the firing process of these rare types of Jian wares and reveal their historical heritage features.

Study on the coloring mechanism of Longquan light greenish-blue celadon glaze from the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasties

Zhen Sang et al.

Summary: The coloring mechanism of the light greenish-blue celadon glaze used in Longquan kiln during the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasties was studied through colorimetry, XRF, XRD, XPS, and SEM/EDS analysis. The results showed that the color of the celadon glaze was mainly determined by the Fe2+ to Fe3+ ratio, as well as the presence of quartz crystals and air bubbles in the glaze. The color difference between the celadon from the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasties and the celadon from the Ming Dynasty can be attributed to the higher Fe2+ to Fe3+ ratio in the former. The phase-separated structural color had little influence on the color of the celadon glaze from the Southern Song and Yuan Dynasties.

Colouring mechanism and firing process of celadon from the Xiangzhou kiln in Anyang, China, from the 5th-7th century

Jihong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the colouring mechanisms and firing process of two types of celadon glazes from the Xiangzhou kiln, namely yellow-green and earthen-yellow glazes. The results show that the two enamels have different formulations, with the yellow-green glaze fired in a reducing atmosphere and the earthy yellow glaze fired in an oxidising atmosphere. The colouring mechanism of the Xiangzhou kiln celadon is mainly dominated by chemical colouring and aided by structural colouring caused by the microstructure.

Study on the colouring, microstructure, and glaze formula of 'Ru-type ware' excavated from Qingliang Temple kiln in Henan Province, China

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: The study of 'Ru-type ware' glazes from Qingliang Temple Kiln found that they fall into the celadon-glazed system with dominant wavelength range of 535-660 nm. The glaze formulas of different colors are similar but not identical, with variations in the content of color oxides Fe2O3 and TiO2 leading to the different glaze colors. It was also revealed that Ru-type ware glaze is a crystallisation-phase glaze, showing some influence from Ru Guan ware in the firing process.

Degradation mechanism of the Ru wares unearthed from the Qingliangsi site in Henan, China

Yan He et al.

Summary: The degradation of Ru glazes is caused by the heterogeneity of the glaze microstructure, with fine crackles providing a fast path for corrosion. The special soil environment at the Qingliangsi site is a key factor leading to the degradation of Ru wares.

Evaluation of Quantitative XRF Analysis Applied to Determine Cobalt Sources in Chinese Blue-and-White Porcelain

Q. Ma et al.

Summary: A method was developed in the 1950s in Oxford to differentiate cobalt sources for Chinese blue-and-white porcelain using the ratios between MnO, Fe2O3, and CoO. Analysis of six blue-and-white porcelain sherds from the Luomaqiao kiln was conducted using XRF on the glaze and SEM-EDS in cross-section, revealing different ratios between MnO, Fe2O3, and CoO. The limitations of major and minor quantitative analyses for distinguishing cobalt sources are discussed.

Firing process and colouring mechanism of black glaze and brown glaze porcelains from the Yuan and Ming dynasties from the Qingliang Temple kiln in Baofeng, Henan, China

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed black glaze and brown glaze porcelain samples from the Qingliang Temple kiln site in Baofeng, Henan, China dating back to the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The brown glaze porcelain exhibited a rare epsilon-Fe2O3 phase, while the black glaze porcelain had a glass phase and alpha-Fe2O3 phase. Different glaze formulations were used for brown and black glazed porcelain, derived from the transformation of black glaze porcelain through different firing atmospheres and cooling rates.
