Significance of Co-ion Partitioning in Salt Transport through Polyamide Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Li Wang et al.

Summary: It has been observed that the salt permeability of polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membranes increases as the feed salt concentration increases. However, studies using analytical techniques have shown that the salt partitioning coefficient decreases with increasing salt concentration, contradictory to the increase in salt permeability. In this study, the dependence of total ion and co-ion partitioning coefficients on salt concentration and solution pH was investigated. Results showed that the co-ion partitioning increased while total ion partitioning decreased with increasing salt concentration. The increase in co-ion partitioning was in line with the trend of salt permeability observed in RO experiments. The study further demonstrated that the dependence of salt and co-ion partitioning on salt concentration was more pronounced at a higher solution pH. The results suggest that co-ion partitioning, rather than salt partitioning, governs salt transport through RO membranes.

Tutorial review of reverse osmosis and electrodialysis

P. M. Biesheuvel et al.

Summary: This article presents the latest theories and applications of reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED), the two most important membrane technologies for water desalination and treatment. The solution-friction (SF) model is introduced for RO of neutral solutes, explaining the relationship between advection, diffusion, solute partitioning and the coupled fluxes of water and solutes. The theory is then extended to describe RO for salt solutions with charged membranes. For water desalination, module-scale calculations are used to determine the optimum operational conditions based on a cost calculation that considers energy and material costs. The two-fluid model (TFM) is discussed for comprehensive description of ion and water flow in both RO and ED, and its accuracy in describing osmosis experiments is highlighted. Additionally, optimization studies of multiple module combinations for RO and ED are presented, and the relevance of concentration polarization is evaluated using a 3D model for cross-current flow in an ED module.

Salt and Water Transport in Reverse Osmosis Membranes: Beyond the Solution-Diffusion Model

Li Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the salt-water separation mechanisms of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is critical for the further development and optimization of RO technology. In this study, a solution-friction model is developed to describe the intricate transport mechanisms of water molecules and ions through the membrane. Experimental measurements validate the model, showing strong dependence of salt permeability on feed salt concentration and applied pressure, in stark contrast to the widely used solution-diffusion (SD) model.

Comparison of Energy Consumption of Osmotically Assisted Reverse Osmosis and Low-Salt-Rejection Reverse Osmosis for Brine Management

Zhangxin Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the energy consumption of OARO and LSRRO for MLD/ZLD applications and found that LSRRO has lower energy consumption when treating moderately saline water, but has the potential to outperform OARO when treating high salinity water in terms of energy efficiency. Additionally, both OARO and LSRRO could potentially have 50% lower energy consumption compared to mechanical vapor compressor, commonly used in MLD/ZLD applications. The feasibility of OARO and LSRRO based on membrane module availability and capital cost was discussed, suggesting that LSRRO may be more feasible than OARO.
