Mix-charged nanofiltration membrane: Engineering charge spatial distribution for highly selective separation

Jianquan Luo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the importance of charge spatial distribution in nanofiltration (NF) membranes and suggests that NF membranes with specific charge spatial distribution can be called mix-charged membranes. The roles of Donnan effect on NF separation selectivity and antifouling ability for mix-charged membranes are discussed, as well as the effect of horizontal/longitudinal charge distribution on NF performance. Three fabrication technologies for mix-charged NF membranes and their strategies to regulate charge proportion and polarize charge distribution are summarized. However, there are still unclear issues in the separation mechanisms of mix-charged NF membranes, and a deeper understanding and better control of charge spatial distribution are needed.
