Plasma-Assisted Surface Modification and Heparin Immobilization: Dual-Functionalized Blood-Contacting Biomaterials with Improved Hemocompatibility and Antibacterial Features

Hatice Ferda Ozguzar et al.

Summary: The inferior hemocompatibility or antibacterial properties of blood-contacting materials and devices can be improved through a plasma-enhanced modification strategy. This study demonstrates the successful surface tailoring of polypropylene (PP) using plasma etching and amine-rich precursor mediated coating. The heparin-coated PP surfaces obtained through this method show high hydrophilicity, surface activity, and antibacterial properties, as well as decreased blood coagulation and protein adhesion.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) nanofibers as potential materials for blood separation

Antoine Venault et al.

Summary: This work investigates the association of P(S-r-AA) copolymer with PVDF in the fabrication of electrospun fibers for blood filtration, showing improved wetting of nanofibers and enhanced separation and retention of white blood cells. The results demonstrate the potential of PVDF-based nanofibers as efficient separation media for whole blood, with further efforts needed to enhance biocompatibility and red blood cell recovery.

Surface Modification of ETFE Membrane and PTFE Membrane by Atmospheric DBD Plasma

Zuohui Ji et al.

Summary: Fluorine resin membranes have great potential for high-performance chemical protective clothing due to their excellent chemical resistance. However, integrating fluorine resins into other materials is challenging due to their low surface energy and poor bondability. In this study, atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was used to modify fluorine resin membranes, improving their surface properties and adhesion strength. The results provide important insights for developing effective strategies to integrate fluorine resin membranes into chemical protective clothing fabrics.

Thermo-responsive bioseparation engineered for human leukocyte enrichment process driven by functionalized polypropylene bio-separators

Ying Fu et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the development of a new thermo-responsive membrane for the enrichment of human leukocytes. The membrane is able to selectively catch and release leukocytes, allowing for their efficient concentration. The optimized membrane showed significant improvement in the platelet/leukocyte ratio and erythrocyte/leukocyte ratio when used with white blood cell concentrate or whole blood. This novel bio-separator has potential applications in medical diagnostics.

Biomarkers for sepsis: more than just fever and leukocytosis-a narrative review

Tatiana Barichello et al.

Summary: A biomarker is a measurable indicator of a patient's clinical condition that can be measured accurately and reproducibly. In sepsis patients, there are various biomarkers such as PRMs, complement system, and cytokines. However, further research is needed to identify the optimal combinations of biomarkers.
