Techno-economic assessment of the one-step CO2 conversion to dimethyl ether in a membrane-assisted process

Serena Poto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of membrane reactor technology with in-situ removal of water on the synthesis of DME via CO2 hydrogenation. The membrane reactor allows for a significant decrease in catalyst mass and H2 feed flow, as well as a reduction in utilities and CO2 emissions. The membrane technology contributes to a remarkable improvement in operating costs, although the current DME market price is much lower. However, with predicted decreases in renewable H2 price and zero-to-negative cost for CO2 feedstock, the membrane-assisted system could become competitive in the future.

Model validation of a packed bed LTA membrane reactor for the direct synthesis of DME from CO/CO2

Ainara Ateka et al.

Summary: The study successfully validated a model for simulating the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) in a packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) using a LTA zeolite hydrophilic membrane. Experimental runs showed that the model accurately predicted the molar fractions of compounds in the reaction medium and their evolution over time. The partial separation of H2O from the reaction medium in the PBMR led to higher DME yield, CO and CO2 conversions compared to systems without membrane.

Tailoring pore structure and surface chemistry of microporous Alumina-Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes (Al-CMSMs) by altering carbonization temperature for optimal gas separation performance: An investigation using low-field NMR relaxation measurements

Luke Forster et al.

Summary: The carbonization temperature of Al-CMSM significantly affects pore size, hydrophilicity, permeance, and permselectivity. Lower carbonization temperatures produce more hydrophilic membranes with higher water permeance. Water permeance is higher than CH4 permeance due to the larger kinetic diameter of CH4 and the enhanced adsorption-diffusion transport mechanism in hydrophilic pores.

Summary: The study focuses on the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) by hydrogenation of CO2 in a packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) using a hydrophilic LTA zeolite membrane to remove water, thereby improving the efficiency of methanol synthesis and dehydration stages. The results show good DME yield and CO2 conversion rate under certain conditions with high catalyst stability.

Selective Hydrogenation of CO2 to Hydrocarbons: Effects of Fe3O4 Particle Size on Reduction, Carburization, and Catalytic Performance

Junhui Liu et al.

Summary: Conversion of CO2 via hydrogenation to chemicals and fuels using iron-based catalysts is a promising route, but different particle sizes of Fe3O4 nanoparticles have varying effects on catalytic performance, with larger particles being more difficult to reduce and carburize. Various iron species formed during the reaction result in different catalytic performances, with the catalyst having an appropriate proportion of Fe3O4 and Fe5C2 phases achieving the highest CO2 conversion and olefins-to-paraffins ratio.
