Global burden of heart failure: a comprehensive and updated review of epidemiology

Summary: Heart Failure (HF) is a multi-faceted and life-threatening syndrome with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting over 64 million people. While the incidence of HF has stabilized in industrialized countries, the prevalence is increasing due to population ageing and improved treatment. Developing countries lack substantial data on HF epidemiology, which shows different features compared to the Western world. This review provides updated estimates on global burden of HF including prevalence, incidence, outcomes, and costs.

Enablers and barriers in upscaling telemonitoring across geographic boundaries: a scoping review

Summary: Telemonitoring is a method of monitoring a person's vital functions remotely using technology. However, implementing telemonitoring on a large scale is challenging. This scoping review identified the enablers and barriers for upscaling telemonitoring across different healthcare settings. The most frequently mentioned factors influencing upscaling are resources, access to electronic medical records, and frontline staff knowledge. Successful upscaling requires insight into critical success factors, the use of technology in usual care, early reimbursement planning, change management programs, and clear regulatory conditions and guidelines.

Pandemic-Triggered Adoption of Telehealth in Underserved Communities: Descriptive Study of Pre- and Postshutdown Trends

Summary: The study explored whether the temporary shift to telehealth services has changed attitudes toward the usage of technology-enabled health services in rural communities. The trend in telemedicine claims had an opposite pattern to that in nontelemedicine claims across the three periods. Claims related to behavior and mental health had the highest rates of telemedicine usage after the onset of the pandemic. The rate of telemedicine usage remained at a high level after the rollout of mass vaccination.

Patient Perspectives of a Non-Invasive Telemonitoring Tool for Patients with Heart Failure

Summary: This study aimed to clarify patients' experiences in using a telemonitoring tool for heart failure. Through qualitative analysis, five themes were identified: habituation of self-care behavior, no burden for use, a feeling of security, additional functions, and advice rather than guidance. The tool was found to be easy to use and has the potential to promote self-management in patients.

Summary: The study found that the increase in co-payments in the Netherlands led to a decrease in guideline-recommended continuous outpatient psychiatric care for patients with bipolar disorder, and an increase in crisis psychiatric care. The Effect of Noninvasive Telemonitoring for Chronic Heart Failure on Health Care Utilization: Systematic Review

Summary: Most studies indicate that telemonitoring has no significant effects on healthcare utilization measures, except for an increase in nonemergency outpatient department visits. The consequences of telemonitoring on nonemergency outpatient visits should be given more attention by regulators, payers, and providers. This review highlights the high clinical and methodological heterogeneity of telemonitoring programs, which should be considered in future meta-analyses aiming to identify the effective components of telemonitoring programs.

Summary: This study explored participants' perspectives on a nurse-led, home-based heart failure self-management program in Singapore through qualitative interviews. Six themes emerged from the interviews, categorized as intervention structure, process, and outcome. Participants perceived the program positively in terms of manageability, areas for improvement, benefits of visiting, personal accountability, knowledge and skills gained, and self-efficacy in cardiac care.

Summary: The study indicates that increasing age, academic clinic type, and higher annual income may be associated with engagement in remote physiological monitoring data transmission, while race and gender are not significant factors. Association of neighbourhood socioeconomic trajectories with preterm birth and small-for-gestational-age in the Netherlands: a nationwide population-based study

Summary: The study found that in the Netherlands, disadvantaged neighbourhood SES trajectories were associated with higher odds of adverse birth outcomes. Women living in stable low-SES neighbourhoods had higher odds of preterm birth and being small-for-gestational-age (SGA). However, the odds of preterm or SGA birth in other areas were comparable to those seen in high SES areas.
