Thermal convection in a higher-gradient Navier-Stokes fluid

Brian Straughan

Summary: We discuss models for flow in a class of generalized Navier-Stokes equations, focusing on thermal convection and deriving critical Rayleigh and wave numbers for convective fluid motion. We analyze both linear instability theory and fully nonlinear stability theory, examining the theories of Stokes couple stress, dipolar fluid, Green-Naghdi, Fried-Gurtin-Musesti, and Fried and Gurtin. We find that the Stokes and Fried-Gurtin-Musesti theories share the same partial differential equations, while Green-Naghdi and dipolar theory are similar. The analysis of boundary conditions is crucial for understanding the differences among these five theories.

VISCOELASTODYNAMICS OF SWELLING POROUS SOLIDS AT LARGE STRAINS BY AN EULERIAN APPROACH*

Tomas Roubicek et al.

Summary: In this paper, a model of saturated hyperelastic porous solids at large strains is formulated and analyzed. The material response is assumed to be of a viscoelastic Kelvin-Voigt type, and inertial effects are considered as well. The flow of the diffusant is driven by the gradient of the chemical potential and is coupled to the mechanics via the occurrence of swelling and squeezing. Buoyancy effects due to the evolving mass density in a gravity field are covered, and higher-order viscosity is included for physically relevant stored energies and local invertibility of the deformation. The whole system is formulated in a fully Eulerian form in terms of rates. The energetics of the model is discussed, and the existence and regularity of weak solutions is proved by a combined regularization-Galerkin approximation argument.

Quasistatic Hypoplasticity at Large Strains Eulerian

Tomas Roubicek

Summary: This study investigates the isothermal quasistatic hardening-free plasticity problem at large strains. The model is reformulated in terms of rates and the plastic distortion is completely eliminated. The existence and regularity of weak solutions are proved using a regularization combined with Galerkin approximation. The study also considers rate-dependent plasticity and includes the Jeffreys' viscoelastic rheology and Kelvin-Voigt rheology.

Visco-elastodynamics at large strains Eulerian

Tomas Roubicek

Summary: This article formulates isothermal visco-elastodynamics in the Kelvin-Voigt rheology using velocity and deformation gradient in spatial Eulerian coordinates. The model allows a generally nonconvex stored energy and a nonlinear 2nd-grade nonsimple viscosity for regular velocity field. The assumption of small volume variations simplifies the analysis and uses the concept of semi-compressible materials. The existence of weak solutions is proved using the Galerkin method and a suitable regularization based on smooth velocity fields.

An Eulerian finite-volume approach of fluid-structure interaction problems on quadtree meshes

Michel Bergmann et al.

Summary: A quadtree-based fully Eulerian finite volume approach is proposed in this paper for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction problems. The method solves both incompressible and viscous fluid and structure phases monolithically on the entire computational domain, improving the efficiency of parallel computations. Several two-dimensional test cases are simulated and compared with existing literature, demonstrating the reliability of the method. In addition, the versatility of the numerical model is illustrated through a biomedical application.
