Seasonal trends in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and mortality in the United States and Europe

Timothy L. Wiemken et al.

Summary: Determining whether SARS-CoV-2 exhibits seasonality is important for public health planning. Using time series models, we found seasonal spikes in COVID-19 rates from November through April for all outcomes and in all countries. Our results support the use of annual preventative measures and booster vaccines, similar to those used for influenza.

COVID-19 seasonality in temperate countries

Filippo D'Amico et al.

Summary: Seasonality of SARS-CoV-2 was found to play a role in countries with temperate climates, with a decrease in mortality during the summer period. Additionally, the impact of vaccination rates on mortality was stronger when temperatures were lower.

Role of meteorological factors in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States

Yiqun Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that lower air temperature, lower specific humidity, and lower ultraviolet radiation were significantly associated with increased transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2, with humidity playing the largest role. In total, 17.5% of R-t was attributable to meteorological factors, with higher attributions in northern counties than in southern counties.
