In-situ and ex-situ investigation of deformation behaviors of a dual-phase Mg-Ni-Y alloy

Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: The deformation behaviors of a dual-phase Mg alloy containing α-Mg and 18R-LPSO phases were investigated in this study. The 18R phase, accounting for 11.3 vol.%, contributed to 23.0% of the overall alloy deformation. The coordinated twinning deformation of α-Mg matrix through the slip of basal dislocations and the kinking deformation of Mg slices induced by the 18R phase were observed during the early stage of deformation. At the end of deformation, a large number of T2-type stacking faults were generated, improving the ductility of the alloy. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-strength and good ductility dual-phase Mg alloys.

Ameliorating strength-ductility efficiency of graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced aluminum composites via deformation-driven metallurgy

Yuming Xie et al.

Summary: 1.5 wt% graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced aluminum matrix composites were prepared using deformation-driven metallurgy to enhance the strength-ductility efficiency. The study focused on the strengthening-toughening behaviors related to the dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets, interfacial bonding, and grain refinement. Severe plastic deformation and dynamic recrystallization resulted in the uniform dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets and ultra-fine microstructures. The composites showed high-efficiency interfacial bonding and achieved self-compensating spatial continuity through the automatic flow of Al2O3 nanodots.

In situ EBSD/DIC-based investigation of deformation and fracture mechanism in FCC- and L12-structured FeCoNiV high-entropy alloys

Zhenhua Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the plastic deformation behavior of a polycrystalline L1(2)-structured FeCoNiV high-entropy alloy (HEA) using in situ electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and digital image correlation (DIC) methods. The different deformation mechanisms and their effects on mechanical performance were explored. The results showed that slip systems and lattice rotation rate played important roles in determining the strength and deformation behavior of the HEA.

Anisotropic response in mechanical behavior of additively manufactured Al-Mn-Sc alloys by in-situ EBSD tensile tests

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between grain orientation, size, and aspect ratio and mechanical properties in selectively laser melted Al-Mn-Sc alloys using in-situ EBSD tensile method. The results showed that grain orientation and size influenced the mechanical anisotropy, and mechanical anisotropy was accurately predicted by introducing an anisotropy coefficient.

Structure optimization for improving the strength and ductility of heterogeneous carbon nanotube/Al-Cu-Mg composites

K. Ma et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous carbon nanotube (CNT)/Al-Cu-Mg composites with ductile zones (DZs) and brittle zones (BZs) were fabricated, where the grain size and width of DZs were controlled by high energy ball milling (HEBM) for improved strength-ductility. Under optimized conditions, the heterogeneous composite showed a significant increase in elongation and tensile strength compared to the uniform composite, with appropriate grain refinement in the DZs alleviating low yield phenomenon and reducing stress concentration in the BZs.

Microstructure evolution and hot deformation behavior of carbon nanotube reinforced 2009Al composite with bimodal grain structure

K. Ma et al.

Summary: The hot deformation behaviors of bimodal carbon nanotube reinforced 2009Al (CNT/2009Al) composite were investigated by establishing processing map and characterizing microstructure evolution. The results showed that the grain size in the ultra-fine grained zones remained stable during deformation, while the coarse grained zones elongated and tended to be perpendicular to the compression direction. Low temperature with high strain rate (LTHR) and high temperature with low strain rate (HTLR) could increase the length/width ratio of the coarse grained zones, but also led to instable deformation.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of hydriding and dehydriding reactions in Mg-based hydrogen storage materials

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Magnesium-based materials show promise as hydrogen storage candidates due to their high capacity, environmental friendliness, and high Clarke number characteristics. However, limited thermodynamic and kinetic properties have posed challenges for their engineering applications. Recent progress has focused on improving these properties through alloying, composite materials, and nanocrystallization, leading to enhanced hydrogen storage efficiency.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic effect between graphene nanoplates and in situ nanoparticles on aluminum matrix composites, showing that both GNPs and ZrB2 nanoparticles play a crucial role in reinforcing and toughening mechanisms. The composite with 0.1 wt% GNPs and 3 wt% ZrB2 achieved a high ultimate tensile strength of 426 MPa, 33.5% higher than that of AA6111, while maintaining an elongation greater than 15%.

Achieving high strength and ductility in copper matrix composites with graphene network

Lan Shi et al.

Summary: The graphene network/Cu (GN/Cu) composites are able to achieve a high strength and good ductility combination with low graphene content in the copper matrix. The efficient grain refinement strengthening, dislocation strengthening and load transfer strengthening are achieved through the construction of a graphene network in the composites. Additionally, effective crack bridging and deflection provided by the graphene network contribute to the toughening of the GN/Cu composites.
