Discrete twinning dynamics and size-dependent dislocation-to twin transition in body-centred cubic tungsten

Jiangwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten (W) nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. The results show that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These findings reveal a strong competition between twinning and slip in W nanowires, with a transition size of around 40 nm. The insights provided by this work are important for understanding the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.

Tracking the sliding of grain boundaries at the atomic scale

Lihua Wang et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries (GBs) are crucial for the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline materials, yet the atomic-scale dynamic processes of GB deformation remain unclear. This study presents an in situ atomic-resolution investigation on how sliding-dominant deformation occurs at general tilt GBs in platinum bicrystals, involving direct atomic-scale sliding and sliding with atom transfer across the boundary plane.

Deformation Mechanisms and Remarkable Strain Hardening in Single-Crystalline High-Entropy-Alloy Micropillars/Nanopillars

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: Limited studies have been conducted on plastic deformation mechanisms in single-crystalline high-entropy alloys with body-centered cubic phases. Experimental results have shown significant size effects on yield/flow stress and remarkable strain hardening in these HEA micropillars/nanopillars, especially those with<100> orientation. Dislocation slip, reaction, tangling, accumulation, and solid solution effects contribute to the observed size effects on yield/flow stress and strain hardening, but these mechanisms depend on nanopillar orientation.

Atomic-Scale Hidden Point-Defect Complexes Induce Ultrahigh-Irradiation Hardening in Tungsten

Summary: Tungsten exhibits high strength in extreme environments, but irradiation hardening limits its service life. Research suggests that ultra-high irradiation hardening in tungsten mainly originates from atomic-scale hidden point-defect complexes.

High-strength nanocrystalline intermetallics with room temperature deformability enabled by nanometer thick grain boundaries

Ruizhe Su et al.

Summary: The study reports on a newly identified deformable nanocrystalline CoAl intermetallics with Co-rich thick grain boundaries, which exhibit ultrahigh yield strength and significant work hardening during compression. Transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that deformation induces abundant dislocations inside CoAl grains with thick GBs, accommodating plastic deformation. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the important role of Co-rich thick GBs in promoting the nucleation of dislocations at the Co/CoAl interfaces, enhancing the plasticity of the intermetallics.
