Effects of Mesogenic Cycloaliphatic Units on the Microstructure and Properties of Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Polyesters

Eun-Ji Choi et al.

Summary: We synthesized new thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters (TLCPs) with different mesogenic cycloaliphatic unit content in the mainchain and investigated their structure-property relationship. The TLCPs were composed of three different repeating units and the effects of the size and content of TPA/CHDM-derived repeating units were compared to HNA-based repeating units. The TLCPs showed thermotropic liquid crystalline features and associated fibrillar structures. The melting temperatures of the TLCPs decreased with increasing TPA/CHDM-based repeating units, while the glass transition temperature increased. The TLCP with 2.5 mol% TPA/CHDM-derived repeating units exhibited the maximum elastic storage modulus.

Aramid fibre as potential reinforcement for polymer matrix composites: a review

Pratibha Dharmavarapu et al.

Summary: In recent years, researchers have shifted from commercially available glass fibres to aramid fibres for manufacturing composites. The low density, ease of availability, and high strength of aramid fibres have attracted attention, resulting in significant progress in their development for industrial applications. Understanding aramid fibres and their composites is crucial for achieving better results in various industries.

High-performance UV-curable epoxy acrylate nanocomposite coatings reinforced with aramid nanofibers

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: UV-curable epoxy acrylate (EA) nanocomposite films with different amounts of aramid nanofibers (ANFs) were synthesized using a bottom-up method, and their effects on coating properties were investigated. The results showed that ANF incorporation decreased UV transmittance while enhancing mechanical properties, without affecting transparency or final conversion. This study highlights the potential of ANF-reinforced nanocomposites in improving UV-shielding and mechanical properties of EA coatings.

Summary: This research describes a method to improve the interfacial properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite materials. By dip-coating UHMWPE fibers with aramid nanofibers (ANFs), the fiber surface roughness is increased and mechanical interlocking with the matrix is enhanced, while also providing chemical bonding opportunities between the fiber and the epoxy matrix.

Structure and Properties of Thermotropic Polyarylate/Polycarbonate Blends Compatibilized by Catalyst-assisted Ester-Carbonate Interchange Reactions

Ha-Eun Gang et al.

Summary: The morphology, rheological, thermal, and dynamic mechanical properties of thermotropic polyarylate/polycarbonate (PAR/PC) blends were investigated in this study. The compatibility of the blends was improved by increasing the catalyst loading during melt-processing. Formation of PAR-co-PC copolymers in the blends was confirmed by infrared spectroscopic analysis. The melt-processed blends with higher catalyst loadings exhibited increased shear moduli and complex viscosity. In addition, the melt-crystallization and melting temperatures of PAR and the glass transition temperature of PC decreased with higher catalyst contents. Interestingly, the residue at 800 degrees C increased for blends with higher catalyst loadings. The elastic storage moduli of compatibilized PAR/PC blends were similar to neat PAR and higher than neat PC. This suggests that PAR/PC blends can be efficiently compatibilized via catalyst-assisted ester-carbonate interchange reactions through melt-compounding, making them suitable for use as engineering polymeric materials to alleviate the disadvantages of thermotropic PAR.

Enhanced interfacial adhesion of aramid fiber reinforced rubber composites through bio-inspired surface modification and aramid nanofiber coating

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: A simple and facile method of aramid nanofiber (ANF) coating was demonstrated to improve the interfacial adhesion between aramid fiber (AF) and rubber matrix. By introducing nanostructures on the fiber surface, the interfacial adhesion was enhanced significantly, with minimal impact on the mechanical properties of the fibers. This method showed advantages of simplicity, feasibility, and time effectiveness, making it significant for industrial applications.
