Investigation on the Impact of Cementation Media Concentration on Properties of Biocement under Stimulation and Augmentation Approaches

Anant Aishwarya Dubey et al.

Summary: Biomediated soil improvement has emerged as a promising solution for enhancing soil engineering properties in the past decade. The efficacy of biocementation depends largely on the material properties of the precipitated crystals, which are influenced by the concentration of cementation reagents. In this study, specific microbes were investigated for their biocementation potential at different concentrations of cementation media (CM). The soil strength improvement was evaluated through a needle penetration test, and the biochemical properties of the microbes were analyzed to understand the reasons behind the variation in penetration resistance. The findings suggest that the concentration of CM plays a significant role in the response of microbes, and the morphology, texture, and quantity of precipitated CaCO3 crystals are important factors influencing the strength of the biocemented soil.
