An Overview on the Effect of Severe Plastic Deformation on the Performance of Magnesium for Biomedical Applications

Mariana P. Medeiros et al.

Summary: There is great interest in using severe plastic deformation (SPD) to improve the performance of magnesium for biological applications. However, contradictory reports exist regarding the properties and trends. This study reviews the structural features, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and biological response of magnesium and its alloys processed by SPD, with a focus on equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and high-pressure torsion (HPT). The results show that grain refinement through SPD can improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of magnesium without compromising the biological response, indicating the great potential of SPD for enhancing the performance of magnesium for biological applications.

Investigation of Microstructure and Texture Evolution in an AZ31/Mg-Gd Alloy Hybrid Metal Fabricated by High-Pressure Torsion

Ouarda Ould Mohamed et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid material was fabricated through high-pressure torsion (HPT) processing by straining separate discs of AZ31 and Mg-0.6Gd alloys through rotations. The microstructure and texture near the bonding interface were investigated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructure exhibited two grain refinement regimes and the texture changed through the HPT processing. The microstructures and textures of the hybrid alloy were found to be controlled by twinning, slip systems, second phases, and different dynamic recrystallization mechanisms.

In-situ investigation on the microstructure evolution of Mg-2Gd alloys during the V-bending tests

Chao He et al.

Summary: In this study, the microstructure in Mg-2Gd and AZ31 alloys during V-bending tests was observed in situ. The microstructure and texture evolutions were characterized using electron backscatter diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The results revealed a unique microcracks nucleation mechanism in Mg-Gd alloys, which can be attributed to the more random topology of the grain boundary network, lower grain boundary cohesion, and enhanced hinder ability for the dislocations due to the segregated Gd atoms. The microcracks with a large angle theta with the extruded direction were preferred nucleated in Mg-Gd alloys due to the larger normal stress on grain boundaries during the bending process.

Effect of gadolinium on the deformation and recrystallization behavior of magnesium crystals

Konstantin D. Molodov et al.

Summary: Single crystals of pure Mg and Mg-0.8 wt% Gd alloy were compressed at room and elevated temperatures to study the activation of prismatic and pyramidal (c+a) slip. The addition of Gd did not increase (c+a) slip activity, but had a significant impact on continuous dynamic recrystallization in Mg-Gd alloy. The improved formability in polycrystalline Mg-Gd alloys is mainly attributed to changes in recrystallization behavior and its effect on texture.

Plastic deformation and fracture mechanisms of rolled Mg-8Gd-4Y-Zn and AZ31 magnesium alloys

Jia-fei Deng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructure evolution and plastic deformation mechanism of rare-earth and rare-earth-free magnesium alloys during room temperature deformation. The results show that the twin boundaries in rare earth alloys cannot move due to the pinning effect of precipitates, leading to difficulties in slip transmission and the generation of ledges. On the other hand, slip variants between adjacent grains in rare-earth-free alloys are strain compatible, and twinning stimulates the generation of slip for coordinated deformation.

Effect of Process Temperature on the Texture Evolution and Mechanical Properties of Rolled and Extruded AZ31 Flat Products

Maria Nienaber et al.

Summary: The application of magnesium flat products is affected by the limited formability at room temperature and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties, which is mainly caused by the underlying hexagonal crystal structure of magnesium and the development of strong crystallographic textures during massive forming processes. This study focuses on the influence of the manufacturing process on the microstructure and texture evolution of flat products made of conventional magnesium alloy AZ31, and discusses the effects on mechanical properties and formability.

Grain refinement mechanism of Mg-3Sn-1Mn-1La alloy during accumulative hot rolling

Z. Y. Zhao et al.

Summary: The effect of lanthanum (La) on the grain refinement of Mg-3Sn-1Mn alloy during accumulative hot rolling is significant. Through dynamic recrystallization, the grain size of Mg-3Sn-1Mn-1La alloy becomes finer, attributed to the uniform distribution of MgSnLa compounds within the grains, increasing the dislocation density and promoting recrystallization more effectively.
