Diet composition and prey preference of tiger, leopard, and dhole in Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Southern Western Ghats, India

Bawa Mothilal Krishnakumar et al.

Summary: Comprehensive information on prey availability and diet composition is crucial for effective conservation strategies for large apex predators. In the Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in India, data on prey selection and activity patterns of tigers, leopards, and dholes were lacking. This study found that these predators coexisted by partitioning limited food resources and had different prey preferences and activity patterns. The Indian chevrotain and gaur were important prey species for conservation management.

Assessing tiger corridor functionality with landscape genetics and modelling across Terai-Arc landscape, India

Suvankar Biswas et al.

Summary: India has led global tiger conservation efforts and doubled its wild tiger population since 2006. To ensure the persistence of these growing populations in shrinking habitats, focused conservation planning is needed across all existing tiger landscapes in India. Through field-sampling, genetic analyses, and GIS modelling, the study investigated tiger population structure, source-recipient dynamics, and functionality of corridors in the Terai-Arc landscape of India.

Summary: The escalation of human-wildlife conflict poses a barrier to the conservation of ecological corridors globally. However, an innovative incentive-based mitigation mechanism can encourage coexistence of people and wildlife, providing benefits to both parties.

Recovery of tigers in India: Critical introspection and potential lessons

Yadvendradev Jhala et al.

Summary: India has successfully recovered tiger populations and their ecosystems through government intervention, community support, conservation measures, anti-poaching efforts, relocation incentives, conflict mitigation, improved monitoring technology, and reintroduction programs. This multi-faceted approach has led to the recovery of tigers in India and provides a model for conservation success in other range countries.
