Quantitative characterisation and modelling of the effect of cut edge damage on the magnetic properties in NGO electrical steel

Fanfu Wu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the plastic damage at the cut edges of electrical steel NGO laminations in electric motors and its effect on the magnetic performance of the material. Characterization of the plastic damage was done using EBSD kernel average misorientation (KAM) maps and nano-indentation. The relationship between the plastic strain and the distance from the cut edge was determined. The study also includes 3D FEA modeling using COMSOL Multi-Physics software to simulate the magnetic property deterioration of the cut edges. The results show that both plastic strain and residual elastic stress need to be considered for accurate modeling of the cut edge magnetic performance.
