Long-term outcomes of moyamoya disease versus atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy using high-resolution MR vessel wall imaging

Mingming Lu et al.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes and surgical benefits between moyamoya disease (MMD) and atherosclerosis-associated moyamoya vasculopathy (AS-MMV) using high-resolution MRI (HRMRI). The findings showed that patients treated with encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) had a lower incidence of events, and MMD patients were more prone to ischemic stroke compared to AS-MMV patients. Therefore, HRMRI could be used to identify patients at a higher risk of future cerebrovascular events.

Nomogram to Predict Good Collateral Formation After the STA-MCA Bypass Surgery in Adult Patients With Moyamoya Disease

Haogeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a prediction nomogram model for postoperative collateral formation (PCF) after STA-MCA bypass surgery in adult patients with moyamoya disease. The study found that three preoperative factors (age at operation, diameter of donor branch of STA, and preinfarction period stage) are associated with good PCF. The prediction model based on these factors exhibits high accuracy in predicting good PCF.

Co-existing intracranial and extracranial carotid atherosclerosis predicts large-artery atherosclerosis stroke recurrence: a single-center prospective study utilizing combined head-and-neck vessel wall imaging

Gemuer Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive roles of plaque features, plaque number, and co-existing atherosclerosis in stroke recurrence using combined head-and-neck high-resolution vessel wall imaging. The presence of co-existing intracranial high signal on T1-weighted fat-suppressed images (HST1) and extracranial carotid atherosclerosis were identified as independent imaging predictors of stroke recurrence.

Vessel wall enhancement as a predictor of arterial stenosis progression and poor outcomes in moyamoya disease

Mingming Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between vessel wall enhancement and progression of arterial stenosis and clinical outcomes in patients with moyamoya disease. The results showed that the presence and progression of vessel wall enhancement, as well as middle cerebral artery involvement, were significantly associated with rapid progression of arterial stenosis. Vessel wall enhancement and rapid progression of arterial stenosis were also correlated with future stroke occurrence.

The angiographic presentation of European Moyamoya angiopathy

Sara Pilgram-Pastor et al.

Summary: This study analyzed angiographic presentations of Moyamoya angiopathy in Caucasian patients, showing similarities with Asian patients in extracranial champagne bottle neck sign, Suzuki stages, collateral status, aneurysms, and posterior cerebral artery stenosis. Different Suzuki stages and collateral types were associated with varying risks of cerebral hemorrhage and transient ischemic attacks.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of ASL with single and multiple PLD for CVR and transit time mapping in Moyamoya patients. Results show that multi-PLD ASL has a high agreement with PET and can accurately measure transit time.

The Value of Preoperative Phase-Contrast MRI in Predicting the Clinical Outcome of Moyamoya Disease after Encephalo-Duro-Arterial Synangiosis Surgery

S. Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative hemodynamic status on collateral formation and clinical outcomes in Moyamoya disease patients undergoing EDAS surgery. The results showed that good hemodynamic status of the ipsilateral superficial temporal artery was significantly associated with improved collateral formation and mRS score improvement.

Association of contrast enhancement of proximal internal carotid artery wall and champagne bottle neck sign with ipsilateral stroke in moyamoya disease patients

Fei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of the proximal internal carotid artery (ICA) and their relationship with ipsilateral intracranial stroke in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD) with champagne bottle neck sign (CBNS). The study finds that vessel wall enhancement of the proximal ICA with CBNS is independently associated with intracranial stroke in the ipsilateral hemispheres of patients with MMD, particularly those with multiple lesions.

Summary: This study found that impaired cerebrovascular reactivity is associated with an increased risk of recurrent stroke in patients with symptomatic SIAS. The measurement of CVRMCA can be used as a well-tolerated method to select higher-risk patients for further therapeutic trials.

Intraluminal carotid thrombosis and acute ischemic stroke associated with COVID-19

Diaa Hamouda et al.

Summary: Neurological manifestations of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 include a range of conditions such as encephalopathy, stroke, and even carotid intraluminal thrombi in patients without significant atherosclerotic disease. The endothelial inflammation and hypercoagulable state associated with COVID-19 may increase the risk of arterial and venous thromboembolism.
