Multiphoton ionization of standard optical fibers

M. Ferraro et al.

Summary: This study investigates the multiphoton ionization phenomenon in standard optical fibers. Intense laser pulses are found to ionize the atoms in the fiber structure, leading to material modifications that affect the dynamics of the laser beam. The damage features are analyzed using optical microscopy and X-ray microtomography, and the results provide a foundation for the development of a novel glass waveguide micromachining technique in the field of glass photonics.

X-ray computed μ-tomography for the characterization of optical fibers

Mario Ferraro et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for characterizing glass optical fibers using X-ray absorption as a nondestructive technique. By conducting absorption contrast X-ray computed micro-tomography measurements, information about the spatial profile of the fiber refractive index at optical frequencies is obtained and validated by comparing with complementary characterization techniques.

Origin and physical-chemical control of topaz crystallization in felsic igneous rocks: Contrasted effect of temperature on its OH-F substitution

Mohamed Soufi

Summary: In highly evolved F-rich felsic igneous rocks, topaz Al2SiO4(F,OH)(2) is formed in different genetic stages including orthomagmatic, pegmatitic, transitional magmatic-hydrothermal, and hydrothermal stages. The composition of topaz varies from pure fluor-topaz to Al2SiO4F1.3(OH)(0.7) in magmatic and post-magmatic hydrothermal stages. The OH/(OH + F) ratio of topaz is commonly used as a geothermometer, providing reasonable temperatures for transitional magmatic-hydrothermal/hydrothermal topaz but conflicting with experimental data for magmatic topaz.

F/OH ratio in a rare fluorine-poor blue topaz from Padre Paraiso (Minas Gerais, Brazil) to unravel topaz's ambient of formation

N. Precisvalle et al.

Summary: In this study, blue topaz from Padre Paraiso, Brazil was fully characterized through in situ synchrotron X-Ray and neutron powder diffraction measurements. The research focused on understanding the role of OH/F substitution in topaz and determining the hydrophilicity and exchange reactions of fluorine by hydroxyl groups during mineral formation. The findings suggest that 1170 K may represent the potential initial crystallization temperature of topaz from supercritical fluids in a pegmatite system.

Characterization of Coloured Gemstones by X-ray Micro Computed Tomography

Rene Heyn et al.

Summary: The monetary value of gemstones is determined by rarity, cut, weight, color, and clarity. X-ray micro computed tomography (micro-CT or mu CT) is proposed as an effective method to detect and quantify clarity enhancement in gemstones, providing a unique 3D fingerprint for each gemstone.

On the yellow color of gamma-irradiated brazilianite from Minas Gerais (Brazil)

M. V. B. Pinheiro et al.

Summary: The origin of the strong yellow color induced by gamma irradiation in brazilianite from Brazil was investigated. The study identified an optical absorption band caused by a Schirmer’s-type O-bound small polaron, confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance. The appearance and disappearance of this absorption band, along with other centers, were observed after gamma irradiation and thermal annealing, showing a reversible behavior.

A spectral library for laser-induced fluorescence analysis as a tool for rare earth element identification

Margret C. Fuchs et al.

Summary: Laser-induced fluorescence (LiF) can be a powerful tool for the rapid and accurate identification of rare earth elements (REEs) in natural materials. Establishing a comprehensive standard reference spectral library is crucial for automated analysis and provides a transparent and reproducible database for evaluating REE-bearing rocks.
