Recent advances in room-temperature phosphorescent materials by manipulating intermolecular interactions

Liangwei Ma et al.

Summary: Metal-free room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted significant research interest due to their large Stokes shift, long lifetime, and potential applications in various fields. Recent advances have shown that manipulating intermolecular interactions and molecular engineering can be effective strategies to enhance the efficiency of RTP materials. This mini-review summarizes the progress in organic RTP materials based on these strategies, including typical host-guest assembly, hydrogen-bond assembly, energy transfer process, and exciplex emission system-based materials. The challenges and future prospects in this field are also discussed.

Super Phosphorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (PRET) of Clusterization-Triggered Emission Enables Full-Spectrum Dynamic Room-Temperature Afterglow

Peilong Liao et al.

Summary: Clusterization-triggered emission (CTE) is a powerful strategy for achieving useful luminescence, such as room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). However, the recognition of CTE-RTP is still limited. In this study, the authors demonstrate phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (PRET) in the CTE-RTP system, allowing precise control over the color of the emission. PRET can occur between CTE-RTP and fluorescent dyes, resulting in delayed fluorescence spanning from green to near infrared. This system enables facile achievement of dynamic afterglow, making it highly appealing for anticounterfeiting applications.

Boosting the Phosphorescence Efficiency in Doped Organic Crystals: Critical Role of Hydrogen Bonding

Yingxiao Mu et al.

Summary: Host-guest doping systems using phthalimides (BI) and N-methylphthalimide (NMeBI) as hosts, and 1,8naphthalimide (NI) and 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalimide (4BrNI) as guests, were developed. The system with a strong C=O···H-N hydrogen bond between 0.2% NI/BI (molar ratio) exhibited a higher phosphorescence quantum efficiency (29.2%) than that of NI/NMeBI with a weak C=O···H-C hydrogen bond (10.1%). A similar trend was observed in the 4BrNI guest system. The 0.5% 4BrNI/BI composite achieved a remarkable phosphorescent efficiency of 42.1%, which represents the highest value in NI-based phosphors. This research suggests that stronger hydrogen bonding may contribute more to boosting phosphorescence efficiency.

Efficient ultralong and color-tunable room-temperature phosphorescence from polyacrylamide platform by introducing sulfanilic acid

Yuhang Xu et al.

Summary: This study developed two simple strategies to construct ultralong and color-tunable room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials based on non-covalent and covalent linking of sulfanilic acid (SA) on amorphous polyacrylamide (PAM) framework. The hydrogen bonding in PAM/SA and poly(acrylamide-co-4-acrylamidobenzenesulfonic acid) (PAMABS) effectively suppressed non-radiative transition and induced ultralong RTP emission at ambient conditions. The RTP properties of PAM/SA and PAMABS can be controlled by the molar ratio of acrylamide to SA, and PAMABS showed excitation-dependent color-tunable phosphorescence emission. Both materials exhibited RTP responsiveness to water and heat stimuli, making them suitable for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

In-situ grafting N-arylcarbazoles enables more ultra-long room temperature phosphorescence polymers

Yuefa Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents the modification of N-Arylcarbazole derivatives to enable highly efficient and ultra-long room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in polymer materials. By doping N-phenylcarbazole derivatives into polyvinyl alcohol, the doped films show significantly improved RTP efficiencies and lifetimes. The dual effect of extra n-pi* transition and chemical grafting of boronic acid onto the polymer chains is responsible for the enhanced RTP properties. This work opens up a new strategy for enhancing RTP properties in organic doped polymers.

Activating room-temperature phosphorescence of 1,8-naphthalimide by doping into aromatic dicarboxylic acids

Xiangming Wang et al.

Summary: The room-temperature phosphorescence of 1,8-naphthalimide can be activated by doping it into aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The doping system generates a bright yellow afterglow, and a phosphorescent lifetime of 403 ms and a quantum yield of 4.2% can be achieved with 0.02 mol% doping content of 1,8-naphthalimide and isophthalic acid. Both energy transfer from the host to the guest and the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen-bonding network contribute to the efficient and long-lived phosphorescence observed.

Deliang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the incorporation of organic phosphors into a PVA matrix to achieve room-temperature phosphorescent materials. It reveals that electrostatic and dispersion interactions play crucial roles in determining the ultralong RTP properties, shedding light on the nature of non-covalent interactions in doping PVA systems. Moreover, by simply modifying the active groups of organic phosphors, the researchers successfully achieve an ultralong RTP lifetime, providing new guiding principles for exploring amorphous organic RTP systems.

Tailoring Noncovalent Interactions to Activate Persistent Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Doped Polyacrylonitrile Films

Hongzhuo Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a rational strategy to activate wide-color ranged and persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from amorphous films by embedding electron-rich organic phosphors into an electron-deficient matrix polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The ultralong lifetime of 968.1 ms was obtained for the doped film TBB-6OMe@PAN through tailoring noncovalent interactions between the electron-deficient PAN matrix and electron-rich organic phosphors, indicating the activation of persistent RTP may be triggered by strong electrostatic interactions between the two components. Further theoretical calculations demonstrated that both electrostatic and dispersion interactions are responsible for the activation of persistent RTP in the doped films, with the doped film also showing excellent water resistance after 12 weeks.
