20-Hydroxyecdysone and Receptor Interplay in the Regulation of Hemolymph Glucose Level in Honeybee (Apis mellifera) Larvae

Jing Yu et al.

Summary: The hormone 20E and the ecdysone receptors ECR and USP play critical roles in insect growth and metabolism, including honeybees. This study found that increased levels of 20E led to reduced food consumption and small-sized pupae in honeybee larvae. Metabolomics analysis revealed significant changes in metabolites and metabolic pathways after 20E treatment, particularly in carbohydrate metabolism. The expression of genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism was also affected by 20E treatment. Overall, 20E plays a critical role in regulating carbohydrate metabolism during honeybee metamorphosis.

Impact of single and combined exposure to priority pollutants on gene expression and post-embryonic development in Drosophila melanogaster

Laetitia Frat et al.

Summary: Many priority pollutants are concentrated in the environment due to human activity. The effects of single and binary exposure have been widely explored, but the simultaneous presence of several pollutants in the environment needs to be considered. Using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, we investigated the impact of multiple pollutants on post-embryonic development and gene expression patterns. Molecular biology analyses enhance pollution monitoring and should be incorporated in toxicological studies.

Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Linn Persson et al.

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

The Next Frontier of Environmental Unknowns: Substances of Unknown or Variable Composition, Complex Reaction Products, or Biological Materials (UVCBs)

Adelene Lai et al.

Summary: Substances of unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products, or biological materials (UVCBs) are complex chemical mixtures produced and used worldwide. Applying chemical assessments to UVCBs is challenging due to their unknown or variable composition. New approaches for UVCB assessment are being developed in various fields, but there are information gaps and fragmented practices. Improved data collection and management, as well as concerted efforts from stakeholders, are needed for proper assessment and management of UVCBs.

Contaminants of emerging concerns in recycled water: Fate and risks in agroecosystems

Qingyang Shi et al.

Summary: Recycled water (RW) is recognized as a valuable source for alleviating water crisis. However, the use of RW for agricultural irrigation introduces contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) into the agroecosystem, raising concerns over their potential risks. Understanding the fate processes of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum is crucial for the safe reuse of RW. Current studies show limited accumulation of CECs in irrigated soils and plants, indicating minimal health risks from RW-fed food crops. However, further research is needed to understand the offsite movement and plant accumulation of CECs under field conditions.

Adverse cardiovascular effects and potential molecular mechanisms of DEHP and its metabolites-A review

Zeng-Jin Wen et al.

Summary: There is an association between Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DRIP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), mainly through its active metabolite mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP). DRIP is a risk factor for various adverse CV outcomes such as cardiac developmental toxicity, injury and apoptosis, arrhythmogenesis, metabolic disorders, vascular damage, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and hypertension. The underlying mechanisms involve DNA methylation, PPAR-related pathways, oxidative stress and inflammation, and disturbance of Ca2+ homeostasis. Potential preventive and therapeutic measures include the use of P-glycoprotein, heatshock proteins, antioxidants, curcumin, apigenin, beta-thujaplicin, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, and Ang-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Plastic Waste Degradation in Landfill Conditions: The Problem with Microplastics, and Their Direct and Indirect Environmental Effects

Irena Wojnowska-Baryla et al.

Summary: This article presents the environmental and technical complications encountered during plastic disposal through landfilling, along with the formation and spread of microplastics (MPs) from landfills. MPs are seen as the key vehicles and accumulators of non-biodegradable pollutants and have the ability to transport and absorb pollutants rapidly due to their small size and large specific surface areas.
