Risk of sequelae after invasive meningococcal disease

Summary: This study examined sequelae after invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Denmark from 2005-2020. It found that 25% of IMD survivors experienced one or more sequelae, with the most common being hearing loss, epilepsy, learning disabilities, headache, and visual defects/loss of vision. The study suggests revising IMD treatment guidelines to include routine referral to hearing and vision tests, and increasing awareness among parents of possible learning disabilities.

Septic arthritis due to Neisseria gonorrhoea in Western Australia

It found that GA stably complicates a small percentage of gonococcal infections, with young indigenous females and middle-aged non-indigenous males being the most affected. Summary: This study investigated the emergence of the ceftriaxone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae FC428 clone and its sustained international dissemination. The results suggest that the mosaic penA allele was transferred from oropharyngeal Neisseria subflava to N. gonorrhoeae through transformation, and gyrA QRDR mutations compensated for the fitness cost, contributing to the continued transmission of the FC428 clone.

An analysis of Neisseria meningitidis strains causing meningococcal septic arthritis in England and Wales: 2010-2020

Summary: This study analyzed clinical meningococcal strains associated with meningococcal septic arthritis cases in England and Wales, and identified associations between patient age, the synovial joint affected, and strain characteristics. The knee and the hip were the most commonly affected joints, and different strains had varying likelihoods of causing septic arthritis.

Meningococcal carriage in periods of high and low invasive meningococcal disease incidence in the UK: comparison of UKMenCar1-4 cross-sectional survey results

Summary: The incidence of invasive meningococcal disease in the UK decreased significantly from 1999 to 2014, particularly in serogroup C and serogroup B diseases. A survey conducted in 2014-15 showed a lower carriage prevalence of meningococci in adolescents compared to previous surveys, with a decline in behaviors associated with carriage.

Evidence of Horizontal Gene Transfer of 50S Ribosomal Genes rplB, rplD, and rplY in Neisseria gonorrhoeae

Summary: Horizontal gene transfer has been shown to play a key role in antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, with evidence of HGT found in the genes coding for ribosomal proteins in the Neisseria genus. Recombination events were predicted in N. gonorrhoeae and several commensal Neisseria species, with strong associations between HGT in ribosomal proteins and reduced susceptibility to macrolides. This study is the first to find evidence of HGT-mediated chimerization of ribosomal proteins in bacteria.

Colistin Sensitivity and Factor H-Binding Protein Expression among Commensal Neisseria Species

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of accurately determining the prevalence of Neisseria commensal bacteria, such as N. cinerea and N. polysaccharea, in the general population. Previous research has shown the suppressive effect of these commensal species on meningococcal colonization, highlighting the potential impact of their carriage prevalence on the spread of meningococci. Additionally, the surface expression of the meningococcal vaccine antigen factor H-binding protein by many of these commensal strains may have implications for the use of fHbp-containing vaccines. Carriage of these commensal species could influence the immune response to vaccines or the immune response elicited by vaccination may affect the clearance of these important pharyngeal niche members.

Infective endocarditis caused by Neisseria mucosa on a prosthetic pulmonary valve with false positive serology for Coxiella burnetii - The first described case

Summary: This case report describes a patient with tetralogy of Fallot who developed infective endocarditis on a prosthetic pulmonary valve caused by Neisseria mucosa. The patient underwent valve replacement surgery and a 42-day course of antibiotic treatment with a favourable outcome, despite initially being misdiagnosed with Q fever endocarditis.
