Leverage of resource efficiency over environmental emissions: Case of a megacity in China

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: An integrated approach was used to investigate material metabolism in Shanghai, China. Research showed a certain level of synchronicity in the flows of primary resources, waste, and carbon emissions in the past decades. Improvement in resource efficiency was found to be the most significant driver, resulting in reductions in resource use, carbon emissions, and waste. However, the recent increase in post-use waste flows disrupted the synchronicity and pointed towards a shift in material metabolism from production to consumption side in major Chinese cities.

Regional consumption, material flows, and their driving forces: A case study of China's Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) urban agglomeration

Yanxian Li et al.

Summary: Continuous urbanization and coordinated regional development have transformed Chinese urban agglomerations into significant centers of resource consumption. Economic activity plays a crucial role in driving material consumption growth, while increased efficiency helps to mitigate the increase in consumption. The study highlights the importance of understanding material consumption patterns in typical urban agglomerations for promoting regional resource sustainability.
