Exploring the global trade networks of the tungsten supply chain: Insights into the physical and monetary mismatch among countries

Linbin Tang et al.

Summary: International trade is essential for balancing the supply and demand of critical raw materials such as tungsten, which are geographically unevenly distributed. However, the trade flows and networks linking participating nations have been largely unexplored, causing concerns for materials' criticality and supply risks. This study analyzes the global trade flows of tungsten and explores the evolving roles of participating countries in the trade networks. The findings demonstrate the need for cooperative actions and targeted supply chain management to secure the sustainability of the global tungsten cycle.

Evolution of the anthropogenic chromium cycle in China

Ziyan Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals China's chromium dynamic flows and stocks for the period of 2000-2019. The results show a significant increase in chromium demand in China, driven by the rapid development of the stainless-steel industry. The fluctuating end-of-life recycling ratio over time reflects an unstable demand for old scrap.

Aquatic micro- and nano-plastics in life cycle assessment: Development of an effect factor for the quantification of their physical impact on biota

Jerome Lavoie et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of micro- and nano-sized plastics (MNPs) on aquatic ecosystems, extracting data from academic literature and analyzing the differences in effects on different aquatic species, particularly between polystyrene (PS) and other polymer types. The research suggests that a single generic Effect Factor (EF) could be used for now due to the high uncertainty and lack of statistical difference among MNPs at the single species level.

Estimation of entity-level land use and its application in urban sectoral land use footprint: A bottom-up model with emerging geospatial data

Wei Xie et al.

Summary: The study indicated diverse spatial patterns of sectoral land use in Shanghai. The transportation sector had the highest agglomeration level, manufacturing industry showed higher sectoral heterogeneity, and the service sector had lower land use intensity. This model offers a new way to extract entity-level spatial land use information and is applicable for socio-economic metabolism research.

Quantifying urban mass gain and loss by a GIS-based material stocks and flows analysis

Yupeng Liu et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization leads to increased demand, use, and waste of construction materials. Existing frameworks tend to underestimate material flows due to insufficient descriptions of key processes. This study identifies important processes and integrates them into an improved framework to capture all material flows accurately.

Towards a multiscale framework for modeling and improving the life cycle environmental performance of built stocks

Andre Stephan et al.

Summary: Cities, as complex sociotechnical systems, require measures to enhance the environmental performance of built stocks and mitigate negative externalities. Existing environmental modeling approaches often lack comprehensive evaluation. This study presents a framework that combines life cycle assessment and dynamic modeling to provide a holistic approach for modeling and improving the environmental performance of built stocks. Testing this framework on a case study neighborhood demonstrates its potential in assessing and improving the life cycle environmental performance of cities.

Advancing urban metabolism studies through GIS data: Resource flows, open space networks, and vulnerable communities in Mexico City

Daniel Otero Pena et al.

Summary: Urban metabolism studies provide valuable insights for resource efficiency at the city scale. This article argues for the integration of spatially explicit urban metabolism data in urban planning to improve the development and management of open space networks. The research presents a methodological strategy using GIS data to enhance the applicability of metabolic studies in urban planning, illustrated through a case study in Mexico City. The results of the study provide an improved understanding of borough metabolic profiles, highlighting the potential for more resource-efficient development of open space networks.

A product-component framework for modeling stock dynamics and its application for electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries

Fernando Aguilar Lopez et al.

Summary: This study provides a new framework for product-component systems and 12 different approaches to model their stock dynamics, and discusses their suitability in different contexts. Illustrated by a case study on electric vehicles and their batteries, it highlights the potential of battery replacement and reuse for reducing material demand, emphasizing the importance of understanding these complex systems.
