Biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) films coated with tannic acid as an active food packaging material

Jeong Jin Park et al.

Summary: In this study, eco-friendly food packaging films made of biodegradable polyester P3HB-4HB were prepared as an alternative to non-degradable packaging films. The films were prepared using hot-pressing and surface-modified to be hydrophilic via N2 plasma treatment. Coated with tannic acid (TA) by dip-coating, the films showed improved mechanical and thermal properties without affecting the visible-light transparency. In the banana storage experiment, the films demonstrated lower weight loss and browning compared to non-packaged bananas.

Eco-sustainable design of humic acids-doped ZnO nanoparticles for UVA/light photocatalytic degradation of LLDPE and PLA plastics

Paola Amato et al.

Summary: The mismanagement of plastics leads to high levels of waste and release into the environment, where they can persist for long periods of time due to low degradation rates. Photocatalytic methods, using Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generated by semiconductor materials, offer a promising and cost-effective solution for plastic degradation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this eco-sustainable approach in creating hybrid photocatalysts with enhanced ROS-generating ability for improved plastic photo-oxidation in aqueous environments.

Valorisation of lemongrass essential oils onto chitosan-starch film for sustainable active packaging: Greatly enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activity

Annisa Istiqomah et al.

Summary: This study investigates the utilization of chitosan modified with Dioscorea hispida starch and lemongrass essential oil to develop a novel active food packaging. The experimental results show that the presence of lemongrass essential oil enhances the physical, mechanical, and thermal stability of the packaging, as well as its antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Molecular docking and simulations reveal the antibacterial mechanism of the active compounds in lemongrass essential oil. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the role of lemongrass essential oil in improving the properties of sustainable active food packaging.
