Influence of Piano Key Weir Crest Shapes on Flow Characteristics, Scale Effects, and Energy Dissipation for In-Channel Application

Xiaoyang Shen et al.

Summary: Due to their small footprint and efficient hydraulic performance, piano key weirs (PKWs) have gained attention in the past two decades. The crest shape is a crucial factor influencing the hydraulic characteristics of a PKW. This study investigates the effects of different crest configurations on flow characteristics, energy dissipation, and scale effects of a PKW. The results indicate that crest shape significantly affects nappe trajectory and hydraulic characteristics. Empirical equations were developed to predict discharge coefficients and downstream residual energies for practical design.

A framework for detecting stage-discharge hysteresis due to flow unsteadiness: Application to France's national hydrometry network

E. Perret et al.

Summary: A generic framework is proposed to evaluate the relative discharge error caused by ignoring stage-discharge hysteresis due to transient flow over large gauging station networks. The research used the Jones equation to diagnose the hysteresis effect and found that slope estimates were crucial for the diagnostic results. The method was applied to gauging stations in France and significant hysteresis effects were found at stations with low bed slope and fast flood regime. However, due to the uncertainty of slope data, it was difficult to draw firm conclusions.

3D Printing Technique for Experimental Modeling of Hydraulic Structures: Exemplary Scaled Weir Models

Mario Oertel et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the feasibility of applying 3D printing to fabricate scaled hydraulic experimental models for laboratory use. The results show that properly 3D printed models are more cost- and time-effective during the fabrication process and can deliver accurate results. The layer height of 3D printed models is found to be a critical parameter influencing model quality, and surface irregularities may affect experimental results.

Estimating the Average River Cross-Section Velocity by Observing Only One Surface Velocity Value and Calibrating the Entropic Parameter

Farhad Bahmanpouri et al.

Summary: The current research aims to predict the velocity distribution and discharge rates in rivers based on the entropy concept using only one surface velocity measurement. The uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-based image acquisition technique was applied to collect the surface velocity distribution along two European rivers. The entropy approach accurately predicts the velocity distribution and discharge rates with a percentage error lower than 13%.

B-flood 1.0: an open-source Saint-Venant model for flash-flood simulation using adaptive refinement

Geoffroy Kirstetter et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the possibility of using b-flood, a 2D tool based on shallow-water equations and adaptive mesh refinement, to simulate flash floods in small watersheds on a predictive computational timescale. It aims to reduce the impacts of flash floods in the French Riviera region.
