Estimating water fluxes in the critical zone using water stable isotope approaches in the Groundnut and Ferlo basins of Senegal

Djim M. L. Diongue et al.

Summary: Quantitative knowledge of water fluxes within the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system is essential for sustainable water management in semi-arid agriculture. This study used stable-isotope approaches to evaluate evaporation, transpiration, and groundwater recharge in Senegal's Groundnut basin and Ferlo Valley pasture region. The results showed that evaporation losses primarily occurred during Stage II evaporation and varied between the two regions. The ETa values derived from the isotope approach were similar to other measurement methods and the HYDRUS-1D model. Groundwater recharge was found to be less than 2% of the annual precipitation. Recommendations were provided for preventing changes to isotopic compositions of water samples collected in remote arid regions.

Hydrology of a hydroperiod: Assessing recharge to the High Plains aquifer through a playa in western Kansas

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of functioning playas to aquifer recharge in the Central High Plains region using physical and geochemical evidence. The results indicate higher recharge rates beneath the playa compared to the interplaya, similar to findings in the Southern High Plains region.

Constraining a Flow Model with Field Measurements to Assess Water Transit Time Through a Vadose Zone

Lamine Boumaiza et al.

Summary: Modeling thick vadose zones is challenging due to difficulties in collecting various measured sediment properties. This study developed a flow model for a 7-m-thick vadose zone combining numerical codes and real sediment hydraulic properties. The model was calibrated by fitting simulated and measured water content profiles.

Assessing response times of an alluvial aquifer experiencing seasonally variable meteorological inputs

Lamine Boumaiza et al.

Summary: This study found significant variations in aquifer response times, influenced by variations in vadose zone thickness, vertical inflow events, and local recharge rate. These factors, rather than vadose zone thickness, were found to impact the spatiotemporal changes in aquifer response times.

Hydraulic redistribution by deeply rooted grasses and its ecohydrologic implications in the southern Great Plains of North America

Erik Oerter et al.

Summary: The study found that soil under the deeply rooted switchgrass had consistently higher water content compared to nearby soil under shallow-rooted crops by 15%-100%, likely due to hydraulic redistribution. This redistribution may be a drought avoidance strategy for switchgrass and could potentially be used to supplement soil water for shallow-rooted species in intercropping arrangements.

Using vadose-zone water stable isotope profiles for assessing groundwater recharge under different climatic conditions

Lamine Boumaiza et al.

Summary: This study estimated groundwater recharge rates under different climate conditions using vadose-zone water stable isotope profiles. The recharge rates for arid, semi-arid, and subhumid sites were determined to be 0.2%, 2.5%, and 18% of total annual precipitation, respectively. The recharge rates at semi-arid and subhumid sites were consistent with previous estimates, while the arid site had a lower recharge rate, indicating challenges in applying the piston displacement method in arid regions.
