Hydrologic Control on Arsenic Cycling at the Groundwater-Surface Water Interface of a Tidal Channel

Xuan Yu et al.

Summary: Historical industrial activities have caused soil contamination at coastlines worldwide, which are susceptible to disruptions by climate change and rising sea levels. However, the effects of hydrologic dynamics on contaminant transportation in tidal environments have not been extensively studied. This research collected data from various sensors at a contaminated site near a freshwater tidal channel and found that seasonal groundwater interactions and sub-daily water level fluctuations in the channel contribute to varying redox conditions and contaminant concentrations. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the impacts of sea-level rise on the mobility of coastal solutes.

Molecular Probing of DOM Indicates a Key Role of Spruce-Derived Lignin in the DOM and Metal Cycles of a Headwater Catchment: Can Spruce Forest Dieback Exacerbate Future Trends in the Browning of Central European Surface Waters?

Joeri Kaal et al.

Summary: Peatlands and coniferous forests in the Northern Hemisphere and Central Europe are experiencing significant environmental changes, resulting in browning of surface waters and elevated concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and metals. This has implications for global carbon cycle, peatland and forest management, and water treatment. A study in the Harz Mountains, Germany, found strong relationships between DOM and metals, with seasonal variations in DOM quality and DOM-metal binding mode. The products of polyphenols play a key role in DOM-metal complexes.

Variability of dissolved organic matter in two coastal wetlands along the Changjiang River Estuary: Responses to tidal cycles, seasons, and degradation processes

Xiaohui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal tidal marsh-estuary systems in the Changjiang River Estuary (CRE). The DOM composition varies with hydrological regimes, seasons, and environmental conditions, and is influenced by removal processes such as photochemical and microbial degradations. The study reveals the dynamics of DOM and its optical properties, as well as the impact of photochemistry and microbial alterations on DOM removal. Principal component analysis (PCA) helps to understand the processes regulating DOM dynamics and differentiate between different marshes and samples affected by episodic weather events. The study highlights the significance of large rivers like the Changjiang River in estuarine marsh DOM dynamics.

Porewater exchange drives nutrient cycling and export in a mangrove-salt marsh ecotone

Fenfang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated a tidal creek in China with a significant mangrove-salt marsh gradient, revealing differences in nitrogen and phosphorus cycling between mangrove and salt marsh that have significant implications for coastal waters. Denitrification dominated nitrogen removal in both mangrove and salt marsh, with salt marsh having less capacity for ammonium production. The study highlighted the impact of mangrove-salt marsh ecotone on coastal eutrophication potential by modifying nutrient stoichiometry and porewater exchange.

How do drying-wetting cycles influence availability of heavy metals in sediment? A perspective from DOM molecular composition

Mei Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of drying-wetting cycles on the availability and mobility of heavy metals in sediment, focusing on the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The results show that drying-wetting cycles can promote the degradation of labile fractions of DOM and retain fractions with high aromaticity and molecular size. The decrease in the availability of Cd is closely related to changes in DOM composition, while Zn and Cu availability remains almost unchanged. These findings have implications for the environmental geochemical cycling of heavy metals in riparian sediment.

Regional-scale investigation of the molecular weight distribution and metal-binding behavior of dissolved organic matter from a shallow macrophytic lake using multispectral techniques

Tuantuan Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, the characteristics and metal-binding behaviors of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different molecular weights (MW), fluorescence components, and functional groups in Dongping Lake were explored using various spectroscopic techniques. The results showed that the lake was dominated by low MW protein-like materials. Upon addition of copper (Cu2+) and lead (Pb2+), the complexation preferentially occurred in protein-like materials, which was influenced by MW fractionation. Different active points were identified for binding of Cu and Pb, and the protein-like components exhibited higher binding affinities than humic-like components. The study also revealed spatial variations in the complexing affinities of Cu and Pb in the lake, with higher affinities observed in the center and entrance, respectively.

Effects of fiddler crab bioturbation on the geochemical migration and bioavailability of heavy metals in coastal wetlands

Feng Pan et al.

Summary: Fiddler crabs, as ecosystem engineers, can alter biogeochemistry in coastal wetlands. This study found that their burrowing activity increases the concentration of heavy metals in sediment and enhances the retention of dissolved heavy metals. The hydrological conditions in different coastal wetlands regulate the effects of bioturbation on heavy metal behavior. Therefore, the importance of bioturbation in heavy metal migration and bioavailability needs to be reconsidered.

How Does Mangrove Expansion Affect Structure and Function of Adjacent Seagrass Meadows?

Cayla R. Sullivan et al.

Summary: Global temperature rise leads to species-specific geographic range expansions, such as mangroves encroaching temperate salt marshes, altering animal communities and nutrient cycling in intertidal zones. Changes in intertidal plant composition influence environmental conditions, biogeochemical cycling, seagrass growth, and invertebrate communities. The impacts of adjacent intertidal habitats on subtidal ecosystems highlight the far-reaching consequences of species range expansions in marine systems.

Pore water exchange-driven inorganic carbon export from intertidal salt marshes

Joseph J. Tamborski et al.

Summary: Respiration in intertidal salt marshes generates dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) that is exported to the coastal ocean through tidal exchange, with the physical driving factors of water exchange and chemical flux being key to constraining coastal wetland contributions to regional carbon budgets. Spatial and temporal variability of marsh pore water exchange and DIC export were assessed from a microtidal salt marsh in Massachusetts, showing that DIC transport and fluxes can vary substantially across salt marshes under similar conditions within the same estuary. Seasonal and annual variability in marsh pore water exchange, driven partly by rising sea levels impacting high marsh elevation zones, may lead to greater DIC export.

Submarine Groundwater Discharge from an Urban Estuary to Southeastern Bay of Bengal, India: Revealed by Trace Element Fluxes

R. Prakash et al.

Summary: The study investigated submarine groundwater discharge and associated trace element fluxes from the Coleroon River estuary to south bay in India. It found that trace element concentrations were influenced by processes such as fresh groundwater discharge and seawater intrusion, as well as sediment adsorption, mixing, and elemental exchange. The mobility of trace elements was higher with increasing salinity, which was affected by the behavior of freshwater, seawater, and mixing. The calculated dissolved trace elements fluxes varied due to factors like pH changes, redox environment in the aquifer, sediment interactions, and marine organism cycles.
