Glacier contribution to lowland streamflow: A multi-year, daily geochemical hydrograph separation study in subarctic Alaska

Summary: Glacier melt water is an important freshwater source for many regions, but little attention has been given to its contribution to subarctic watershed-scale geochemistry and runoff. This study conducted a six-year geochemical hydrograph separation study of melt season daily streamflow in a glacierized watershed in Interior Alaska. The results showed that glacier discharge is the largest seasonal contributor to total warm season lowland streamflow, with large daily variability. The study also highlighted the importance of considering the variability of source contribution in glacierized watersheds when studying hydrologic function.

Hydrological, thermal and chemical influence of an intact rock glacier discharge on mountain stream water

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the discharge from an intact rock glacier on a high-elevation stream in the NW Italian Alps. Despite draining only 39% of the watershed area, the rock glacier contributes a large amount of discharge to the stream, particularly in late summer and early autumn. Ice melt is not a significant component of the discharge due to the insulating debris mantle. The sedimentological characteristics and internal hydrological system of the rock glacier play a major role in storing and transmitting groundwater.

A multi-millennial record of rock glacier ice chemistry (Lazaun, Italy)

Summary: Active rock glaciers are indicators of mountain permafrost consisting of unconsolidated debris mixed with ice. The age of a frozen rock glacier core in the Central European Alps was determined to be around 10,000 years. This study presents the chemical composition of the Lazaun core, revealing differences in acidity, metal concentration, and solute content between the two lobes. The ice core also provides evidence of prehistoric atmospheric deposition from various sources.

Examining the variability of rock glacier meltwater in space and time in high-elevation environments of Utah, United States

Summary: Rock glaciers are common in alpine landscapes and play an important role as a poorly quantified water resource. This study focused on three questions regarding rock glacier hydrology: 1) Does the composition of rock glacier meltwater vary annually? 2) How does the composition of rock glacier meltwater depend on bedrock type? And 3) How do rock glaciers in a catchment affect stream water chemistry? The researchers collected water samples from two rock-glacierized mountain ranges in Utah, United States, with different lithologies. The results show that the water composition of rock glaciers in the Uinta Mountains shifts from a snowmelt source to an internal ice source throughout the melting season, consistently across years. The study also found notable differences in the chemistry of rock glacier water between the two study areas, which can be linked to the contrasting bedrock types. These findings emphasize the influence of rock glaciers on the hydrochemistry of high-elevation stream systems.

Towards a hydrogeomorphological understanding of proglacial catchments: an assessment of groundwater storage and release in an Alpine catchment

The results show that steep zones only store water for a few days, while flatter areas maintain baseflow for several weeks. Storage-discharge characteristics of an active rock glacier catchment in the Innere olgrube, Austrian Alps

Summary: Various hydro(geo)logical tools were used to assess the active rock glacier Innere olgrube and its catchment area in the Otztal Alps, Austria. The study found that snowmelt, ice melt, and rainfall contribute 35.8%, 27.6%, and 36.6%, respectively, to the catchment. Isotopic data revealed that water derived from ice melt mainly comes from two small cirque glaciers within the catchment.
