Recharge sources and hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater in a heterogeneous karst water system in Hubei Province, Central China

Zejun Wang et al.

Summary: By using a multicriteria approach combining hydrodynamic, hydrochemical, and stable isotopic tools, this study investigated the impact of heterogeneity on karst hydrogeochemistry in a mountainous area in Hubei Province, Central China. The results showed that with increasing circulation depth, water-rock interactions and the heterogeneity of the karst medium led to increased concentrations of certain ions and dissolved total solids in the groundwater. Additionally, the study found seasonal effects on the major ions and nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater through the analysis of 818O and major ions.

Emerging organic contaminants in karst groundwater: A global level assessment

Jasmina Lukac Reberski et al.

Summary: A quarter of the world's population uses groundwater from karst aquifers, which are the most vulnerable groundwater systems to anthropogenic pollution. Studies have shown that the majority of compounds detected in karst groundwater are pharmaceuticals and pesticides, with concentrations varying over five orders of magnitude, and over half of the detected compounds exceeding 100 ng/L.

A Review of Electrical Resistivity Tomography Applications in Underground Imaging and Object Detection

Jullian Dominic Ducut et al.

Summary: This work presents a comparative study of Electrical Resistivity Tomography applications in underground imaging and object detection. It compares parameters such as data acquisition, array protocol, inversion model, geological site description, and number of profiles for each application. It also introduces a classification of these applications based on the type of underground objects detected, and identifies the issues and challenges from each solution.

Summary: In this study, a hydro-chemical model was developed to simulate incipient karst generation in three-dimensional jointed layered carbonates. The simulation results showed that different flow regimes and initial penetration lengths have an impact on karst morphology.

Determination of groundwater recharge processes and evaluation of the 'two water worlds' hypothesis at a check dam on the Loess Plateau

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that areas with shallow groundwater and check dams on the Loess Plateau in China can promote water cycling from precipitation to groundwater at a faster rate compared to tablelands with deep loess layers. The preferential and matrix flows play different roles in groundwater recharge, and when preferential flow is dominant, isotopic differences between water sources are minimal, contradicting the predictions of the 'two water worlds' hypothesis.

Environmental isotopes (δ18O, δ2H, 222Rn) and hydrochemical evidence for understanding rainfall-surface water-groundwater transformations in a polluted karst area

Wenjing Qin et al.

Summary: This study identified the transformation processes of karst water systems in Southwest China based on physical-chemical indicators and isotopic signals, indicating complex sources of water supply and pollution in the area. Additionally, the results of the radon-222 mass balance model revealed the exchanges between groundwater and surface water in different seasons and locations.

Time lapse electric resistivity tomography to portray infiltration and hydrologic flow paths from surface to cave

Matthias Leopold et al.

Summary: This study validated a theoretical hydrological model of the karst critical zone by using time-lapse electric resistivity tomography (TL-ERT) to monitor the area above Golgotha Cave in Western Australia. The TL-ERT program identified previously unknown permanent water storages and fast hydrological flow pathways, confirming and extending the existing hydrogeological model. The resulting conceptual model showcased annual recharge patterns, preferential flow paths, and time lags between soil moisture saturation and seasonal connections in the karst system.

Nitrogen Leaching and Nitrogen Balance under Differing Nitrogen Fertilization for Sugarcane Cultivation on a Subtropical Island

Ken Okamoto et al.

Summary: The study shows that reducing nitrogen fertilizer application in sugarcane cultivation can decrease nitrogen loads and improve nitrogen use efficiency. Although reducing the amount of nitrogen in the first application leads to a decrease in yield, it still maintains relative stability in the first and third seasons.

Global groundwater wells at risk of running dry

Scott Jasechko et al.

Summary: Groundwater wells supply water to billions of people, but millions of wells are at risk of running dry if groundwater levels decline by only a few meters. Newer wells are not being constructed deeper than older wells in some places with significant groundwater level declines, suggesting that they are equally likely to run dry if groundwater levels continue to decline.

Freshwater system of coral inhabited island: Availability and vulnerability (Magoodhoo Island of Faafu Atoll-Maldives)

Barbara Leoni et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impacts of anthropic activities on groundwater quality in a typical island of the Maldives, highlighting the moderate contamination and localized heavy pollution of groundwater resources. To address these impacts, it is essential to establish a sewage system paired with wastewater recycling to reduce water over-exploitation. Collaborative and educational initiatives can increase the capacity for planning sustainable development.
