Ecological and health risk assessment and quantitative source apportionment of dissolved metals in ponds used for drinking and irrigation purposes

Summary: This study evaluated the dissolved metal levels in 10 ponds used for irrigation and drinking water sources in the north of Saros Bay, Turkiye. The results showed that the metal levels in all ponds were below the critical values set for drinking water and irrigation. Therefore, the metal pollution in these ponds has minimal impact on human health and ecological risks.

Nonpoint source arsenic contamination of soil and groundwater from legacy pesticides

Summary: This study evaluates the potential for arsenic contamination of groundwater from former orchards in Connecticut and found that elevated levels of arsenic and lead are still present in orchard soils. There is a strong spatial relationship between arsenic-contaminated wells and historic orchards, suggesting that historic orchard soils may be a contributing nonpoint source of arsenic to groundwater in Connecticut.

Hydrochemical characteristics and groundwater quality in the thick loess deposits of China

Hydrochemistry and source apportionment of boron, sulfate, and nitrate in the Fen River, a typical loess covered area in the eastern Chinese Loess Plateau

Summary: The Fen River Basin in the eastern Chinese Loess Plateau faces water deficiency and significant human impacts on hydrochemistry and water quality. Analysis revealed that water quality was influenced by both natural and pollution inputs, with lower dissolved solutes in forest areas and higher values in cropland and city areas. High boron levels were mainly attributed to silicate weathering and evaporite dissolution, while SO42- concentrations were mainly from sulfates. Additionally, urban and industrial inputs played a role in riverine boron levels. Nitrification was identified as the primary nitrogen cycling process. Municipal sewage was found to be the main source of NO3-, highlighting the importance of sewage reduction policies for improving water quality.

Seasonal variations of toxic metal(loid)s in groundwater collected from an intensive agricultural area in northwestern Turkey and associated health risk assessment

Summary: Ipsala district in the northwest of Turkey is an intensive agricultural area where paddy cultivation has been carried out for over 50 years. The levels of toxic metals in drinking water samples were measured and compared with guidelines, showing that water quality is suitable for consumption with no health risks. Carcinogenic risk levels were within acceptable range, indicating no health hazards to local residents.

Source apportionment and risk assessment for available occurrence forms of heavy metals in Dongdahe Wetland sediments, southwest of China

Summary: This study used statistical models to determine the sources of heavy metals in urban wetland sediments in southwest China. The results showed that anthropogenic activities were the major contributors to the pollution. The positive matrix factorization model was found to be more accurate in predicting the concentrations of heavy metals. The risk assessment model revealed that the levels of heavy metals did not pose significant ecological or human health risks.

Changes in rainfall erosivity from combined effects of multiple factors in China's Loess Plateau

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall erosivity in the Loess Plateau and examined its relations to rainfall amount, temperature, and large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns. The results showed that rainfall erosivity had an insignificant increase overall but exhibited spatial variability. Rainfall amount was found to be the regional-scale controlling factor, and global atmospheric circulation patterns such as ENSO and ENSO-AO also influenced rainfall erosivity at different timescales.

Water quality assessment of the Karasu River (Turkey) using various indices, multivariate statistics and APCS-MLR model

Summary: Groundwater quality in the Fen River Basin (FRB) was mainly characterized as bicarbonate-calcium-sodium type water with variations in solute concentrations along the river, influenced by carbonate and silicate weathering, evaporites dissolution, and anthropogenic sources. The seasonal variations of selected trace elements were significant, with differences in pollution sources for heavy metals like Ag, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Tl. Anthropogenic inputs, especially related to coal industries, significantly impacted groundwater quality in the FRB.

Groundwater quality changes in peri-urban areas of the Walloon region of Belgium

Comparison of characteristics, water quality and health risk assessment of trace elements in surface water and groundwater in China
