Influence of atmospheric circulation on the variability of hydroclimatic parameters in the Marmara Sea river basins

Abdullah Akbas et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of atmospheric dynamics on rainfall and runoff variability in Marmara Sea river basins using principal component analysis and trend analysis. The correlation between rainfall and runoff PC scores and 500 hPa geopotential reveals their relationship. The North Atlantic Oscillation shows a strong correlation with rainfall and runoff PC scores, especially in winter. The trends and oscillations in runoff are consistent with rainfall, except for summer, and are related to teleconnections.

Seasonality, persistency, regionalization, and control mechanism of extreme rainfall over complex terrain

Abdullah Akbas

Summary: This study quantifies various properties of extreme rainfall in Turkey, such as spatial similarity and temporal variability, and identifies the influences of topography, large-scale weather systems, and seasonality on extreme rainfall using principal component analysis. Model-based clustering is used to generate eight extreme rainfall regions with different return periods. The study also detects positive trends and persistence in extreme rainfall across all regions, indicating an increase in natural hazards.

The Effects of Spatial Resolution Variability of Digital Elevation Models on Flood Hazard Analysis

Hasan Ozdemir et al.

Summary: This study analyzed flood hazards in the Ulus settlement using different source and resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). The results showed the importance of choosing the appropriate DEM for more accurate results. Higher resolution DEMs provide more detailed and accurate data, but also come with increased cost and model instability.

Summary: This study examines the relative flash flood susceptibility of thirteen watersheds in southeastern Bangladesh using 18 morphometric parameters. Through spatial analysis algorithms and topographic indices, the combined effects of morphology and topography on flash flood susceptibility are investigated within selected watersheds.

Summary: Developing a shared understanding of current flood risk among stakeholders is a key goal of flood risk management. While flood maps are valuable tools for improving this understanding, supplementing them with 3D visualization techniques is seen as increasingly powerful for engaging people with flood hazards.

Do small and large floods have the same drivers of change? A regional attribution analysis in Europe

Miriam Bertola et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown varying trends in average floods and flood quantiles across Europe. This paper proposes a new framework to attribute flood changes to potential drivers, such as extreme precipitation, antecedent soil moisture, and snowmelt. Results indicate that different regions in Europe are influenced by different drivers in the changing flood patterns.
