Multi-criteria method for the realistic placement of water quality sensors on pipes of water distribution systems

C. Giudicianni et al.

Summary: This paper aims to address three issues in the optimal placement of water quality sensors for protecting water distribution systems. The proposed method restricts optimization to important pipes, introduces dummy nodes, and uses a multi-criteria decision-making tool to select effective sensor locations. The method is tested on the water distribution system of Parete, Italy, showing positive results.

Optimal sensor placement for contamination detection: A multi-objective and probabilistic approach

Sandra Maria Cardoso et al.

Summary: This research presents a multi-objective approach combined with post-processing methods for optimizing sensor placement in water networks and analyzing contamination using probability functions. The Pareto front is analyzed with a clustering method, using a coverage matrix to evaluate the centers of each cluster, and an automatic selection solution method based on distances to the most suitable solution is also explored.

Comparison of topological, empirical and optimization-based approaches for locating quality detection points in water distribution networks

Giovanni Francesco Santonastaso et al.

Summary: The paper explores three different approaches to locate quality detection points in a water distribution network (WDN): empiricism, optimization, and topology. While the empirical approach commonly used is found to be unsatisfactory, the optimization-based approach, though more effective, is challenging due to its requirement of a calibrated hydraulic model. The topological approach, on the other hand, proves to be effective and easy to adopt for water utilities, as it does not require hydraulic information and simulation, making it a simpler alternative to the optimization-based approach.

Optimal sensor placement for contamination identification in water distribution system considering contamination probability variations

Zukang Hu et al.

Summary: Optimal placement of sensors is crucial for the safety of water distribution networks. Considering variations in node contamination probabilities can enhance the detection and identification of contamination events. This study proposes a method that utilizes a hierarchical algorithm and comparisons of placement schemes to achieve this goal.

Revisiting the Water Quality Sensor Placement Problem: Optimizing Network Observability and State Estimation Metrics

Ahmad F. Taha et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational method for optimal placement of Water Quality (WQ) sensors in Water Distribution Networks (WDN) that considers the overlooked metric of state estimation and network-wide observability of the WQ dynamics. The algorithm takes into account the time-varying nature of WQ dynamics due to changes in the hydraulic profile. Detailed case studies are provided, highlighting key findings, observations, and recommendations for WDN operators.

A New Evolutionary Approach to Optimal Sensor Placement in Water Distribution Networks

Andrea Ponti et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new algorithm for optimizing sensor placement by evaluating objective functions with a simulation model and representing fitness of sensor placements as heatmaps using probabilities. This probabilistic representation is used to derive new genetic operators, quality indicators, and criteria for selecting the best solutions among the Pareto set.
