Mechanobactericidal Nanotopography on Nitrile Surfaces toward Antimicrobial Protective Gear

Deepak Patil et al.

Summary: This study used the reactive ion etching (RIE) technique to create cicada wing-inspired nanotopography on commercially pure (CP) nitrile sheets and nitrile gloves for medical use. The etched nitrile surfaces showed reduced bacterial colonization and membrane damage against P. aeruginosa. These findings have implications in designing next-generation personal protective gear and other important applications in the age of antimicrobial resistance.

Role of antiseptics in the prevention and treatment of infections in nursing homes

P. J. Alves et al.

Summary: Inadequate infection control, wound care, and oral hygiene protocols in nursing homes have negative impacts on residents' quality of life. This review evaluates the current and potential roles of antiseptics, particularly povidone-iodine, in managing infections in nursing homes. Povidone-iodine demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against MRSA and other microbes in chronic wounds and oral cavity. It also shows promise in MRSA decolonization, chronic wound management, and oral care.

The strange history of surgical gloves in orthopaedic surgery (part I): from no gloves and no hand washing to the introduction of cotton gloves in orthopaedic surgery

Philippe Hernigou

Summary: This article evaluates the use of surgical gloves during the 18th century, 19th century, and early 20th century. The results indicate an evolution in the materials used for gloves, but surgeons initially opposed their use. The probability of surgeons wearing gloves in photographs increased over time, reaching 100% in 1950.

Skin Microbiome and Treatment-Related Skin Toxicities in Patients With Cancer: A Mini-Review

Brianna N. Richardson et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of the skin microbiome in cancer treatment-related skin toxicities, particularly from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. The current literature found changes in the diversity and abundance of the skin microbiome during cancer treatments, which may be associated with the development and severity of treatment-related skin toxicities.

Efficacy of biocidal agents and disinfectants against the monkeypox virus and other orthopoxviruses

G. Kampf

Summary: The number of human monkeypox virus infections is increasing in many countries. The main mode of transmission is direct contact. Disinfection may be necessary in the areas surrounding confirmed cases, as orthopoxviruses can remain infectious on inanimate surfaces for up to 42 days under laboratory conditions. This review evaluates published data on the antiviral efficacy of biocidal agents and disinfectants against monkeypox virus and other orthopoxviruses.

Incidence of occupational contact dermatitis in healthcare workers: a systematic review

F. Larese Filon et al.

Summary: Healthcare workers are at increased risk of developing occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) due to frequent hand washing and glove use. Incidence rates of OCD vary among different regions and time periods, with higher rates observed in specific occupational groups like dental practitioners. Prospective cohort studies are needed to accurately estimate OCD incidence and develop prevention strategies, especially during pandemics.

Chitosan: An Overview of Its Properties and Applications

Inmaculada Aranaz et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a polymer with diverse properties and potential applications, is facing challenges such as poor solubility, complex molecular structure, and varied biological properties. Researchers are exploring the chemistry of chitosan to improve its solubility and enhance its properties, focusing on its biological and technological performance. Additionally, applications of chitosan in green processes, such as the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles and support for biocatalysts, are being investigated for their potential in drug delivery systems.

Antimicrobial Actions and Applications of Chitosan

Cai-Ling Ke et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a naturally occurring product, has biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxic properties, making it applicable in many areas. Its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity provides great commercial potential, but varies depending on its physicochemical characteristics and type of microorganism. Understanding the fundamental properties and modes of antimicrobial action of chitosan, as well as how microorganisms genetically respond to it, can lead to better applications.

Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy: Advancements in Porphyrin-Based Photosensitize Development

James Oyim et al.

Summary: The reduction of available drugs effective against microbes is worsening due to global antimicrobial resistance crisis. Innovative strategies, like Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT), are needed to combat this. PACT utilizes light, oxygen, and a photosensitizer to destroy a wide spectrum of microorganisms, including resistant strains, showing promise in addressing antimicrobial resistance.
