Every breath you take: assessing metabolic costs of toxin resistance in garter snakes (Thamnophis)

Haley A. Moniz et al.

Summary: Specialization of traits can come at a cost to the original function, potentially leading to evolutionary tradeoffs that may threaten specialist populations. Despite this, specialized adaptations in some garter snake populations, such as mutations in sodium channels for toxin resistance, show repeated evolution, suggesting a preference for specialization in certain environments. Our study on toxin-resistant garter snakes found that despite differences in species, they exhibited almost identical mass-adjusted energy expenditure rates at two different temperatures, implying a conserved feature of standard metabolic rate in Thamnophis.

The road not taken: Evolution of tetrodotoxin resistance in the Sierra garter snake (Thamnophis couchii) by a path less travelled

Jessica S. Reimche et al.

Summary: The repeated evolution of tetrodotoxin (TTX) resistance provides a model for studying convergent evolution mechanisms. In investigating garter snakes (Thamnophis) that prey on TTX-bearing newts (Taricha), it was found that there is extensive variation in resistance at different biological scales. However, one species of Thamnophis, Th. couchii, did not show functional variation in certain genetic loci or differences in candidate gene expression, suggesting that historical contingencies may play a role in the local adaptation of different species of Thamnophis.

Tetrodotoxin levels in lab-reared Rough-Skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa) after 3 years and comparison to wild-caught juveniles

Brian G. Gall et al.

Summary: The study found that in lab-reared newts, tetrodotoxin levels increased slowly during the first two years and then jumped considerably in the third year, while wild-caught juveniles were more toxic. These results suggest that tetrodotoxin is unlikely to come through dietary acquisition, but rather newts may be able to synthesize their own toxin or acquire it from symbiotic bacteria.

Stable isotope analysis suggests that tetrodotoxin-resistant Common Gartersnakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) rarely feed on newts in the wild

Andrew M. Durso et al.

Summary: Research shows that even though Gartersnakes have the physiological capability to consume toxic prey, they do not frequently do so. Instead, they primarily feed on Mole Salamanders, slugs, chorus frogs, and mice, with a minimal role for earthworms in their diet.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

Evidence that toxin resistance in poison birds and frogs is not rooted in sodium channel mutations and may rely on toxin sponge proteins

Fayal Abderemane-Ali et al.

Summary: Research shows that the proposed BTX resistance mechanism involving the NaV DIVS6 N-to-T mutation is absent in Pitohui and poison frog NaVs. Additionally, captive-raised poison frogs demonstrate resistance to NaV-directed toxins like BTX and STX, indicating a possible role of toxin sequestration mechanisms in protecting poisonous species.

Gene Conversion Facilitates the Adaptive Evolution of Self-Resistance in Highly Toxic Newts

Kerry L. Gendreau et al.

Summary: The study reveals that moderate TTX resistance evolved early in the salamander lineage in three of the six Na-v paralogs, preceding the appearance of tetrodotoxic newts by around 100 million years. TTX-bearing newts have unique substitutions across the Na-v gene family that provide physiological TTX resistance, with additional substitutions coinciding with positive selection and gene conversion events. Two resistance-conferring changes within newts appear to have spread via nonallelic gene conversion, indicating that gene conversion can accelerate the coordinated evolution of gene families in response to a common selection pressure.
