Potential for mercury methylation by Asgard archaea in mangrove sediments

Cui-Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates along food chains. The diversity and distribution of putative microbial Hg-methylators in mangrove ecosystems were investigated using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. Asgard archaea, including Lokiarchaeota, were identified as potential novel Hg-methylating microorganisms. These findings suggest the important role of Asgard archaea in hgcA evolution and MeHg production.

Composition of organic matter-iron-phosphorus associations in sediments of algae- and macrophyte-dominated zones in Lake Taihu

Jingjing Liu et al.

Summary: The associations of organic matter (OM) with iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) differ between algae-dominated and macrophyte-dominated zones in shallow lakes, as a result of different sources and compositions of organic matter. The OM-Fe-P associations in the macrophyte-dominated zone have a higher C/Fe ratio and a lower P/Fe ratio compared to the algae-dominated zone. This is attributed to the higher production of aromatic organic matter from macrophytes, resulting in more resistant OM-Fe-P associations and lower internal loading of P in the macrophyte-dominated zone.

Toxic metal(loids) levels in the aquatic environment and nuclear alterations in fish in a tropical river impacted by gold mining

Leonomir Cordoba-Tovar et al.

Summary: In this study, concentrations of mercury, methylmercury, and arsenic in the Atrato River were measured, and nuclear degenerations in the fish from the river were explored for the first time. The results showed that mercury and methylmercury concentrations in fish exceeded the WHO limit for populations at risk, while arsenic concentrations were below the international standard. Mercury concentrations in water exceeded the USEPA threshold, whereas arsenic concentrations were below the threshold. The study suggests that the Atrato River basin needs to be monitored and restored according to the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Stability of organic matter-iron-phosphate associations during abiotic reduction of iron

ShuaiLong Wen et al.

Summary: The stability of organic matter-iron-phosphate (OM-Fe-P) associations is influenced by the sources of organic matter, association formation pathways, and elemental stoichiometry. In this study, we investigated the release characteristics of Fe, P, and OM from the abiotic reduction of OM-Fe-P associations. Results showed that coprecipitation of OM with Fe(III) yielded lower release rates compared to adsorption onto iron (hydr)oxide. The inhibitory effect in coprecipitates can be attributed to larger particle size and passivation of the associations by OC. The distribution and aggregation of OC in coprecipitates varied depending on the type of organic matter used.

The iron redox battery in sandy sediments: Its impact on organic matter remineralization and phosphorus cycling

Zhe Zhou et al.

Summary: Permeable sandy sediments on the global continental shelf play a crucial role in regulating organic matter and nutrient cycling in the coastal ocean. This study investigated the biogeochemical processes in North Sea sands under porewater advection and changing redox conditions. The results showed that Fe(III) oxyhydroxides served as the major electron acceptors during anoxic incubation, and Fe(II) in the solid phase acted as a rechargeable redox battery. Furthermore, excessive phosphorus release occurred after the release of Fe(II), potentially increasing net benthic phosphorus efflux under variable redox conditions.

Decreased bioavailability of both inorganic mercury and methylmercury in anaerobic sediments by sorption on iron sulfide nanoparticles

Yuping Xiang et al.

Summary: Iron sulfide nanoparticles (FeSNp) have shown to significantly reduce the bioavailability of both Hg(II) and MeHg in aquatic environments, inhibiting MeHg production and integration into food webs, although there is a potential risk of release when the sorbed contaminants are oxidized, increasing exposure risk to aquatic organisms. These findings provide valuable information for the development of in situ Hg remediation systems.

Mercury Reduction, Uptake, and Species Transformation byFreshwater AlgaChlorella vulgarisunder Sunlit and Dark Conditions

Xujun Liang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that solar irradiation can enhance the reduction of mercuric Hg(II) to elemental Hg(0) by algal cells and their organic matter. Algal organic matter (AOM) was found to be more effective in reducing Hg(II) than algal cells themselves due to cell surface adsorption and uptake of Hg(II) inside the cells under solar irradiation. Additionally, sunlight facilitated the transformation of Hg to less bioavailable species compared to species formed in algal cells in the dark. These findings highlight the important functional roles and potential mechanisms of algae in Hg reduction and immobilization under varying lighting conditions.

Aeration and dissolution behavior of oxygen nanobubbles in water

Shan Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aeration kinetics and dissolution behavior of oxygen nanobubbles (NBs) and their dependence on bubble size. The results show that larger NBs have higher oxygen mass transfer rates and equilibrium dissolution levels. The dissolution kinetics of oxygen NBs are influenced by the initial bubble size, with smaller bubbles dissolving faster and larger bubbles leading to higher equilibrium dissolution levels. Additionally, oxygen NBs determine the dissolved oxygen levels in water.

Understanding the risks of mercury sulfide nanoparticles in the environment: Formation, presence, and environmental behaviors

Pei Lei et al.

Summary: Mercury can be methylated to form the toxic neurotoxin methylmercury, and understanding the methylation process is crucial for predicting the risk. Mercury sulfide, previously considered inert, has been found as nanoparticles with high bioavailability. The behavior of these nanoparticles and their interaction with dissolved organic matter are complex and hinder a comprehensive understanding of their risk. Future research should focus on the formation pathways, presence, and environmental behavior of mercury sulfide nanoparticles influenced by dissolved organic matter.

Reductive biomining of pyrite by methanogens

Rachel L. Spietz et al.

Summary: Pyrite is a common iron sulfide mineral in the Earth's crust. It has been thought to be unreactive in the absence of oxygen, but recent studies show that anaerobic methanogens can reduce pyrite and utilize the released iron and sulfur for their own nutritional needs. This process has important implications for element cycling in anoxic habitats.

Summary: This study found that most marine microalgae cannot directly methylate inorganic mercury, but six species can significantly induce the demethylation of methylmercury. The rates of microalgae-mediated demethylation were similar to that of photodemethylation, indicating that microalgae may play an important role in the degradation of methylmercury in marine environments.

Eutrophic levels and algae growth increase emissions of methane and volatile sulfur compounds from lakes

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the emissions of methane (CH4) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) from different eutrophic regions of Lake Taihu. The study found that CH4 emissions increased with eutrophic levels and temperature, and H2S and CS2 were the dominant VSCs emitted from the lake. The relative abundance of Cyanobacteria and the algal growth promoted VSC emissions, which had a positive correlation with CH4 oxidation potential. Controlling algae growth could be an effective way to mitigate CH4 and VSC emissions from freshwater lakes.

Microbial methylation potential of mercury sulfide particles dictated by surface structure

Summary: This study found that the crystal structure of nanoparticulate metacinnabar determines its methylation potential, with more exposure of the (111) facet leading to higher methylmercury production.
