Effect of three commercial algaecides on cyanobacteria and microcystin-LR: implications for drinking water treatment using activated carbon

Amanda Sati Hirooka Koshigoe et al.

Summary: Toxic cyanobacterial blooms pose significant threats to public health and the environment in aquatic ecosystems. Using algaecides to control these blooms may lead to the release of more toxins, and the current drinking water treatment technologies are not effective enough in removing these toxins. Our study found that commercial algaecides significantly affect the growth of cyanobacteria and the release of toxins, and they may interfere with the adsorption process of toxin removal. The presence of algaecides altered important adsorption parameters and kinetics, which can impact the management and performance of drinking water treatment plants.

Competitive kinetics of adsorption onto activated carbon for emerging contaminants with contrasting physicochemical properties

Vinicius Diniz et al.

Summary: The study found that the most mesoporous activated carbon showed better drug removal, and in multicomponent experiments, caffeine had the greatest hindrance in adsorption. Multicomponent assays are crucial for evaluating the potential adsorption capacity in real water treatment plants.

Exposure to microcystin-LR in tropical reservoirs for water supply poses high risks for children and adults

Janaina Fagundes Malta et al.

Summary: This study used raw water samples from urban reservoirs in Brazil to analyze the potential risks of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in drinking water. The results showed that inadequate water treatment capacities in the water treatment plants may lead to high risks of exposure to MC-LR, especially for infants. Therefore, it is important to integrate raw water quality and treatment technologies to reduce the risk of MC-LR exposure.

Adsorption of five emerging contaminants on activated carbon from aqueous medium: kinetic characteristics and computational modeling for plausible mechanism

Archana Rao et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) lack standard regulations for discharge, posing potential threats to ecology and humans. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not effective in removing PPCPs, highlighting the need for cost-effective tertiary treatment methods. This study demonstrates the potential of using granular-activated carbon (GAC) for simultaneous removal of five PPCPs, with good adsorption efficiency and potential for computational prediction of uptake mechanisms.

Degradation of antidepressant pharmaceuticals by photoperoxidation in diverse water matrices: a highlight in the evaluation of acute and chronic toxicity

Mylena Spina et al.

Summary: The UV/H2O2 process was effective in degrading bupropion and fluoxetine in water, but escitalopram required a higher dosage of oxidant and UV-C irradiation due to its recalcitrant nature. The study identified primary metabolites as major by-products generated during degradation, impacting the toxicity of the solution differently towards different trophic levels.

Insights into chemical regeneration of activated carbon for water treatment

Summary: Granular activated carbon adsorption is widely used for the removal of contaminants in water, requiring periodic regeneration. Chemical regeneration is identified as an effective alternative, but a suitable regenerant solution for a wide range of contaminants has not been identified yet.
