Preferential Halogenation of Algal Organic Matter by Iodine over Chlorine and Bromine: Formation of Disinfection Byproducts and Correlation with Toxicity of Disinfected Waters

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that iodide has a higher halogenation effect on algal organic matter compared to chlorine and bromine, while chlorine and bromine show higher halogenation ratios for humic substances. Additionally, chloramination treatment produces more iodinated trihalomethanes than other methods and has the greatest impact on cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the disinfected water.

Characteristics and disinfection by-product formation potential of dissolved organic matter in reservoir water in cold area

Xiaotong Xu et al.

Summary: The severe cold and harsh natural conditions in Northeastern China have a serious impact on the water quality of reservoirs, especially in terms of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection by-products (DBPs). This study separated DOM fractions with different molecular weights and evaluated their contributions to water quality indicators and DBP formation potential (DBPFP). The results showed that the molecular weight of DOM plays an important role in DBP formation. Additionally, DOC and UV254 were found to be reliable indicators for predicting DBPFP, while SUVA254 alone cannot predict the generation potential of DBPs.

Abatement of Structurally Diverse Micropollutants by the UV/Permanganate Process: Roles of Hydroxyl Radicals and Reactive Manganese Species

Kaiheng Guo et al.

Summary: The UV/permanganate process is an innovative advanced oxidation process that can degrade various types of micropollutants. HO center dot plays an active role in the degradation of all micropollutants, while Mn(V) is selective towards aromatics containing carboxylic groups. Under acidic conditions, in situ-formed MnO2 can act as a catalyst for permanganate, promoting the degradation of certain pollutants.

The latest advances in the reproductive toxicity of microcystin-LR

Shiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: MC-LR is an emerging environmental pollutant produced by cyanobacteria that poses a threat to wildlife and human health by damaging reproductive organs and causing trans-generational and developmental toxicity. The mechanisms of MC-LR-induced reproductive toxicity mainly include the inhibition of protein phosphatase activity and the induction of oxidative stress, with potential involvement of epigenetic modifications. Additional research is needed to further understand the estrogenic effects of MC-LR and its impact on reproductive health.

Disinfection by-product formation potential of algogenic organic matter from Microcystis aeruginosa: Effects of growth phases and powdered activated carbon adsorption

Keun-Young Park et al.

Summary: Algae exhibit varying disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) depending on the characteristics of the algogenic organic matter (AOM) released during growth. Factors such as growth phase and PAC adsorption efficiency influence DBPFP. UV254 shows strong correlations with DBPFP and can be used as an alternative analytical tool for rapid determination of M. aeruginosa DBPFPs.

Potassium permanganate as a promising pre-oxidant to treat low-viability cyanobacteria and associated removal of cyanotoxins and extracellular organic matters

Xi Li et al.

Summary: The study found that high-viability cyanobacteria are more susceptible to potassium permanganate (KMnO4) treatment compared to low-viability cyanobacteria. Low doses of KMnO4 can minimize membrane damage and decrease extracellular cyanotoxins and organic matters, while high doses of KMnO4 can cause severe membrane destruction for low-viability cyanobacteria. KMnO4-assisted coagulation significantly improves the removal of low-viability cyanobacteria during decay stage of a successive bloom.

Complete Removal of Organoarsenic by the UV/Permanganate Process via HO• Oxidation and in Situ-Formed Manganese Dioxide Adsorption

Wenrui Wei et al.

Summary: The UV/permanganate process is a promising innovation for the removal of organic heavy metals from water, utilizing oxidative and adsorptive species to effectively remove organoarsenic compounds. By investigating the removal of roxarsone and p-arsanilic acid, it was found that the cooperation of oxidation and adsorption could lead to significant removal rates of total arsenic in water treatment.
