Nonphthalate Plasticizers in House Dust from Multiple Countries: An Increasing Threat to Humans

Hongli Tan et al.

Summary: With the tightening restrictions on phthalate esters (PAEs), nonphthalate plasticizers (NPPs) are increasingly used. However, there is limited knowledge on the environmental occurrences, fate, and human exposure risks of many emerging NPPs. This study investigated the presence of NPPs and major PAEs in house dust, finding widespread occurrences of NPPs, such as ATBC, TCTM, TOTM, GMO, MO, and DiBA. Although current exposure may not pose significant health risks, potential hazards cannot be overlooked due to the lack of toxic threshold data and possible cocktail effects.

Electronic-Waste-Driven Pollution of Liquid Crystal Monomers: Environmental Occurrence and Human Exposure in Recycling Industrial Parks

Zhipeng Cheng et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) can be released into the environment, posing a high occupational exposure risk. Fluorinated biphenyls and their analogs are the dominant LCMs found in commonly used smartphones and computers. Various LCMs were also detected in samples from an e-waste recycling industrial park, particularly in outdoor dust and indoor dust from workshops.

Face mask-A potential source of phthalate exposure for human

Huaijun Xie et al.

Summary: Face masks are necessary for fighting against the coronavirus disease 2019 worldwide. However, face masks could be a potential source of phthalate exposure to humans, with higher risks for toddlers. Non-carcinogenic risks related to phthalates in masks were found to be within safe levels, but a large percentage of mask samples exhibited potential carcinogenic effects. This study highlights the importance of managing types and levels of additives in face masks.

Insights into the Endocrine Disrupting Activity of Emerging Non-Phthalate Alternate Plasticizers against Thyroid Hormone Receptor: A Structural Perspective

Torki A. Zughaibi et al.

Summary: Many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) present in the environment due to human activity can disrupt hormone signaling in the human and animal body systems. This study characterized the potential endocrine-disrupting activity of commonly used phthalate plasticizers, DEHP, and emerging non-phthalate alternate plasticizers, DINCH, ATBC, and DEHA, against the thyroid hormone receptor (TR alpha). Molecular simulations showed that all ligands were stably bound to the TR alpha ligand-binding pocket, with DINCH and ATBC exhibiting higher potential for thyroid dysfunction compared to DEHA and DEHP.

E-waste dismantling-related occupational and routine exposure to melamine and its derivatives: Estimating exposure via dust ingestion and hand-to-mouth contact

Leicheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that melamine and its derivatives are present in dust and hand wipe samples, with higher levels in samples collected from e-waste dismantling workshops. Cyanuric acid dominated in hand wipe samples, possibly due to increased use of disinfection products during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dust ingestion is an important exposure pathway for dismantling workers and the general population, while hand-to-mouth contact is also important in certain populations.

Occurrence of newly identified plasticizers in handwipes; development and validation of a novel analytical method and assessment of human exposure via dermal absorption

Christina Christia et al.

Summary: A novel analytical method was developed to monitor four newly identified plasticizers in handwipes. The results showed that DiPGDB was the dominant compound in handwipes. The use of sanitizer in summer and personal care products in winter was correlated with the concentration of plasticizers. Additionally, the concentration of plasticizers in handwipes was significantly higher in toddlers compared to adults.

Distribution, source apportionment and health risk assessment of phthalate esters in outdoor dust samples on Tibetan Plateau, China

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations, distributions, and health risks of phthalate esters (PAEs) in outdoor dust samples on the Tibetan Plateau in China. The results showed that the commercial districts had high concentrations of PAEs, which were mainly attributed to the heavy use of PAEs in consumer products and cosmetics. The main pathways of human exposure to PAEs in outdoor dust were ingestion and dermal absorption.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between external and internal exposure to phthalates and the contribution of dermal absorption to exposure, using paired handwipe and urine samples from residents in a typical urban community in southern China. The results showed that the concentrations and composition profiles of phthalates in handwipes were similar between adults and children, and dermal absorption appeared to be an important exposure pathway, especially for low molecular weight phthalates. Furthermore, children were found to be more sensitive to dermal absorption of phthalates compared to adults.

Update about the disrupting-effects of phthalates on the human reproductive system

Ines Mesquita et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters are synthetic chemicals widely used in the plastic industry, and their exposure has been associated with adverse effects on human reproductive and developmental health. Studies have shown potential impacts on women's and men's reproductive systems, but there is still no consensus on the exact extent of these effects. The increase in infertility rates may be linked to the widespread use of phthalates in plastic production.
