Two-Dimensional Modelling Approach for Electrokinetic Water Transport in Unsaturated Kaolinite

Ruben Lopez-Vizcaino et al.

Summary: This article presents a new version of the M4EKR code adapted for two-dimensional domains and demonstrates its capabilities in studying electrokinetic treatments in unsaturated media. The study shows that the efficiency of soil saturation and energy consumption depend on the number of electrodes, distance between them, and the ratio between the two magnitudes.

Effect of low permeability zone location on remediation of Cr (VI)-contaminated media by electrokinetics combined with a modified-zeolite barrier

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: Research on electrokinetics-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) remediation has mainly focused on homogeneous soils or soils with micro-scale heterogeneities. The potential impact of macro-scale physical heterogeneities, such as stratified layers or lenses, on EK-PRB remediation has not received much attention. This study investigates the effect of a low permeability stratum on EK-PRB remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)). It was found that the location of the low permeability zone relative to electrode positions significantly affects the removal efficiency of Cr(VI), highlighting the importance of macro-scale physical heterogeneity in EK-PRB remediation.

A modeling approach for electrokinetic transport in double-porosity media

Ruben Lopez-Vizcaino et al.

Summary: Electrokinetic techniques are advantageous for enhancing transport phenomena and remediating low permeability soils. This study proposes a modeling approach to simulate electrokinetic transport in double porosity media, explicitly considering the effects of electromigration and the electrical diffuse layer. The comparison of results between synthetic cases in single and double porosity systems highlights the significant influence of microstructural modeling.

Potential mechanisms contributing to the high cadmium removal efficiency from contaminated soil by using effective microorganisms as novel electrolyte in electrokinetic remediation applications

Lo Tsui et al.

Summary: This study tested the use of a solution called effective microorganisms (EM) to remove cadmium from soil. The experimental results showed that EM had a cadmium removal efficiency of 90.5% after 7 days of electrokinetic (EK) treatment. EM's biosurfactant property allowed them to penetrate deeply into the soil and dissolve a high quantity of pollutants.

Enhanced electrokinetic remediation of heterogeneous aquifer co-contaminated with Cr(VI) and nitrate by rhamnolipids

Huichao Xu et al.

Summary: Electrokinetic remediation is an effective in situ technique for the removal of groundwater contaminants. This study investigated the feasibility of using electrokinetic remediation for layered heterogeneous aquifers co-contaminated with hexavalent chromium and nitrate. The results showed that rhamnolipids greatly enhanced the remediation process, improving the removal of hexavalent chromium and nitrate.

Moisture migration and electric distribution of unsaturated clay under electro-osmosis with carbon fiber tape as electrode

Kangwei Tang et al.

Summary: Electro-osmosis is an effective method for reducing moisture content in compacted subgrade soils, with the potential to improve pavement performance. The type of electrode material used, supply voltage levels, and dry densities all impact the efficiency of electro-osmosis. Proper voltage control is crucial for optimizing performance and energy efficiency. Future research should focus on improving electrode-soil contact to minimize energy wastage.

Analytical solutions for one-dimensional contaminant ion transport through electro-kinetic barriers

L. J. Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed two analytical solutions to predict contaminant ion transport in an electro-kinetic barrier, which were verified against experimental data and numerical solutions. The results indicate that contaminant transport in the barrier is influenced by factors such as average applied voltage gradient, barrier thickness, diffusion coefficient, etc.
