Impact of clogging on accumulation and stability of phosphorus in the subsurface flow constructed wetland

Fenglin Jin et al.

Summary: Substrate clogging is a major challenge in the operation of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSF-CWs). This study investigated the impact of substrate clogging on phosphorus (P) accumulation behavior in SSF-CWs. Results showed that increasing clogging degree led to reduced P removal efficiency at low clogging degree, but higher P removal efficiency at high clogging degree. Substrate adsorption was the primary removal pathway in all SSF-CW systems, with higher Fe/Al-P accumulation on the substrate in the highly clogged system.

New insight into ammonium oxidation processes and mechanisms mediated by manganese oxide in constructed wetlands

Cheng Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms and effects of manganese oxide-mediated ammonium oxidation in wetlands. The results showed that wetlands with manganese sand had a higher removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen and reduced nitrous oxide emission. The manganese sand delayed the oxidation of ammonium nitrogen, and the presence of specific bacterial communities promoted the removal of ammonium nitrogen.

A comparative study on aggregation and sedimentation of natural goethite and artificial Fe3O4 nanoparticles in synthetic and natural waters based on extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory and molecular dynamics simulations

Aiming Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation and sedimentation behaviors of natural and engineered nanomaterials in water, and developed a theoretical model considering multiple forces to explain these behaviors. The results showed that magnetic attraction played an important role in the aggregation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, while the aggregation of goethite was affected by NaCl and CaCl2 concentrations. Statistical models were established to evaluate the colloidal stability of the particles. XPS and molecular dynamics simulation results revealed the adsorption behavior of ions on the surface of particles.

Exploring the impact of intensity and duration of Cu (II) depression on aniline-degrading biosystem: Performance, sludge activity and microbial diversity

Junhao Su et al.

Summary: The ecological risk of aniline wastewater biodegradation was evaluated under the stress of different concentrations of Cu(II). Cu(II) stress below 6 mg/L caused slight fluctuations in aniline degradation and significant inhibition of nitrogen removal. Nitrifying performance showed higher tolerance to Cu(II) than denitrifying performance. Cu(II) stress at 10 mg/L led to the collapse of the biosystem and disabled the decontamination function. The dominance of heavy-metal tolerant genera, such as Zoogloea and Azospira, under continuous Cu(II) stress did not result in comparable aniline and nitrogen removal performance as the control group.

Regulation of heavy metals accumulated by Acorns calamus L. in constructed wetland through different nitrogen forms

Jun-Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation of heavy metals by wetland plants under different nitrogen forms influences in constructed wetlands. The findings showed that influents with ammonia could enhance the mobilization of heavy metals from their precipitation fractions and their uptake by plants in the wetland, leading to higher removal efficiency and promoting plant growth and metabolic functions. Overall, regulating water treatment processes to increase ammonia could provide a feasible method for enhancing the accumulation of heavy metals by wetland plants.

Summary: The inhibitory action of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and octylphosphonic acid (OPA) on copper and aluminum in NaCl solution was investigated. Response of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes to tetracyclines and copper in substrate-free hydroponic microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum

Xuan Guo et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs). This study found that the presence of tetracyclines and copper in hydroponic microcosms led to an increase in the levels of resistant genes due to co-selection pressure. Reducing exogenous inputs of antibiotics/heavy metals and suspended solids in effluent is suggested for mitigating resistant genes in phytoremediation technologies.

Impacts of Ag and Ag2S nanoparticles on the nitrogen removal within vertical flow constructed wetlands treating secondary effluent

Chong Cao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of silver and silver sulfide nanoparticles on nitrogen removal and nitrogen functional microbes in constructed wetlands. Results showed that high concentrations of nanoparticles had higher negative effects on nitrogen removal, with Ag NPs at 0.5mg/L exhibiting the largest inhibitory effects. Adverse effects of 2mg/L Ag NPs gradually vanished over time, while Ag2S NPs and Ag+ influenced ammonia transformation and decreased the abundance of nitrogen functional microbes.
