Engineered silica nanomaterials in pesticide delivery: Challenges and perspectives

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: In the past decade, nanopesticides have been rapidly developed as effective and safe alternatives to conventional pesticides. Various nanotechnologies, such as pesticide nanoemulsions, polymer-based nanopesticides, and metal/metal oxide nanoparticle-based pesticides, have been extensively reviewed. Engineered silica nanomaterials (ESNs) have shown promising potential as carriers in nanopesticides for modern agriculture. However, there is limited research specifically on ESN-based nanopesticides. This comprehensive review provides an introduction to synthetic technology, formation mechanism, and surface engineering technology. The advantages of ESN-based pesticide formulation and their structure-function relationship are discussed in detail. Moreover, the challenges and future research in ESN-based nanopesticide development are also discussed.

Nanopesticides in agricultural pest management and their environmental risks: a review

M. Kannan et al.

Summary: Increasing global population drives the need for modernization in agricultural production to ensure sustainable food security. However, frequent pest infestation causes substantial economic losses and negative impacts on agriculture. Traditional pesticides contribute to soil biodiversity loss, decline in pollinator populations, and harm to non-target organisms. Studies have shown the potential benefits of nanotechnology in insect pest control and plant protection, with nanopesticides offering advantages such as improved adsorption, reduced volatilization, and controlled release. Nonetheless, concerns about the potential toxicity of nanopesticides in non-target organisms and their environmental risks have also been raised. This review aims to provide comprehensive information on recent developments in nanopesticides and their environmental consequences.

Summary: This review examines the toxicity of nanopesticides, such as nanoencapsulated atrazine (nATZ), to non-target species. The study establishes protective concentrations for non-target organisms and summarizes the effects of nATZ on different species. The results show that cell and algal models are not sensitive to nATZ, while many terrestrial and aquatic organisms are highly sensitive.

Summary: With the increasing global population and the advancement of nanotechnology, nanopesticides are being proposed as alternatives to conventional pesticides. Nanopesticide formulations using nanocarriers and nanosized active ingredients exhibit enhanced stability, controlled release, superior efficacy, lower dosage requirement, good dispersion, and reduced residue compared to conventional pesticides. However, the potential adverse impacts of nanopesticides on non-target organisms are often overlooked.

Summary: The microbial communities in Malbec vineyards in Argentina were characterized with a predominance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria in the soil and rhizosphere. The order Rhizobiales stood out with its plant-growth promotion properties. Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the most abundant phyla in fungal communities. The wine samples showed low levels of lactic acid bacteria and the presence of acetic acid bacteria throughout fermentation without affecting the wine acidity.

The Evolution of Ecological Diversity in Acidobacteria

Johannes Sikorski et al.

Summary: This study used a culture-independent niche modeling approach to investigate the ecological adaptations and evolution of Acidobacteria in grassland soils in Germany. The results revealed a pronounced ecological diversification among acidobacterial sister clades and showed that the high diversity of soil acidobacterial communities is largely sustained by differential habitat adaptation. The niche modeling approach correctly predicted the physiological properties of cultivated species of Acidobacteria and provided novel information on ecological adaptations that cannot be inferred from standard taxonomic descriptions.
