Comparative study of organic contaminants in agricultural soils at the archipelagos of the Macaronesia

Andrea Acosta-Dacal et al.

Summary: The occurrence of organic pollutants in soil is a major environmental concern. This study analyzed the levels of various organic compounds in agricultural soils in the Macaronesia region and found that pesticides were the most frequently detected compounds. The Canary Islands had the highest number of residues, while Cape Verde had the least contaminated soils.

Concentrations, Sources, and Associated Risks of Polychlorinated Biphenyls Measured in Soil Profiles from Selected Telecom-masts in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

Onoriode O. Emoyan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations, origin, and associated ecological and human health risks of Sigma(28)PCBs in soil profiles from selected telecom-masts in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. It was found that LC-PCBs are the dominant PCBs in the soil samples and the levels of Sigma(28)PCBs from the telecom-masts exceeded recommended standards for urban and agricultural soils. The source identification revealed that PCBs originated from various sources in the telecom masts, suggesting potential ecological and on-site human occupational risks.

Occurrence and distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the atmosphere of the Andean city of Medellin, Colombia

Boris Santiago Avila et al.

Summary: Passive air sampling was conducted to assess various pollutants in the atmosphere of Medellin, Colombia. The study established a baseline for future temporal trend assessments and highlighted the limited scope of national laboratories in analyzing persistent organic pollutants. Efforts are needed to enhance analytical capacity and broaden the scope of monitoring. The PAS strategy proved valuable for pollutant monitoring in air.

Pesticides driven pollution in Kuwait: The first evidence of environmental exposure to pesticides in soils and human health risk assessment

Hassan Alshemmari et al.

Summary: The study found that pesticide residues in the soil of Sulaibiya, Kuwait, were relatively low, with higher concentrations of DDT. Health risk assessment indicated that all stations were in a safe zone, but locations A, B, and D were closer to the low-risk band.

Legacy persistent organochlorine pollutants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface soil from the industrial corridor of South India: occurrence, sources and risk assessment

Sakthivel Selvaraj et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the presence of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from the industrial corridor of Mambakkam and Cheyyar SIPCOT belt. The results showed higher concentrations of OCPs in residential areas, while carcinogenic PAHs and PCBs were higher in industrial sites. Combustion processes and e-waste were identified as potential sources of the contaminants in the soil.

Soil-air partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the Lesser Himalaya region: Influence of soil organic matter, atmospheric transport processes and secondary emissions

Rahat Riaz et al.

Summary: Despite decades of regulations aimed at reducing primary emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), these pollutants are still found in the environment. This study in the Lesser Himalayan Region (LHR) found varying concentrations of OCPs, PCBs, and PBDEs in soils and air, with soil organic matter playing a role in the distribution of SVOCs. Long range atmospheric transport was identified as a major input source of PBDEs and higher chlorinated PCBs in the LHR.

Summary: This study introduces a novel tubular SMFC design with a ceramic tube as a separator and structural support. A mathematical model is proposed to evaluate the impact of system design and soil properties on performance, providing valuable insights for optimal design and operational conditions for SMFCs.
