Future climate conditions accelerate wheat straw decomposition alongside altered microbial community composition, assembly patterns, and interaction networks

Sara Fareed Mohamed Wahdan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the decomposition of wheat straw under future climate conditions and reveals that future climate will accelerate the decay rate of straw only in the early phases of decomposition. It also shows that the projected climate change will increase the abundance of saprotrophic fungi in decomposing wheat straw, and that the impact of future climate on microbial community assembly and interaction networks will depend on the decomposition phase. The study concludes that the impact of future climate on straw decay and microbial traits is limited to the early phases of decomposition.

Genomic Features Predict Bacterial Life History Strategies in Soil, as Identified by Metagenomic Stable Isotope Probing

Samuel E. Barnett et al.

Summary: Soil microbes play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, but our understanding of how the carbon cycle operates in soil communities is limited. This is mainly due to the lack of functional genes that define carbon transformations. Through metagenomic stable isotope probing, we linked genomic features of bacteria to their carbon acquisition and growth dynamics in soil. We identified genomic traits that can predict bacterial ecological strategies, providing insights into bacterial interactions with soil carbon.

Nutrient supply controls the linkage between species abundance and ecological interactions in marine bacterial communities

Tianjiao Dai et al.

Summary: Nutrient scarcity has a significant impact on natural microbial communities. The ribosomal RNA gene operon (rrn) copy number is associated with bacterial growth rate and nutrient demand. The abundance of rrn copy number differs between nutrient-rich coastal sediment and nutrient-scarce pelagic zone of the global ocean. Positive correlations between community-level rrn copy number and nutrients are observed. Furthermore, inter-species co-exclusion is more apparent in coastal sediment than in ocean water samples.

Biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in a weathered, unsaturated soil is inhibited by peroxide oxidants

Onur G. Apul et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of H2O2 oxidation on biodegradation in field-contaminated and weathered soil containing high concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. The results showed that the addition of oxidants removed some organic carbon but had limited effect on the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Moreover, the addition of oxidants limited the viable concentration of microorganisms, altered the composition of soil microbial communities, and created inhibitory conditions in soil.

Deciphering the Mechanisms Shaping the Plastisphere Microbiota in Soil

Yuanze Sun et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and assembly processes of bacterial communities attached to different types and degradability of microplastics in soil ecosystems. The results showed that the attached bacterial communities had lower diversity and diverged from the bulk soil communities. Temperature significantly influenced the differences between plastisphere communities, while the polymer type had no significant effect on community composition. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the plastisphere of polyethylene microplastics exhibited greater complexity and stability. Null model analysis indicated the importance of deterministic processes in shaping the plastisphere communities.

Enhanced rhizoremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls by resuscitation-promoting factor stimulation linked to plant growth promotion and response of functional microbial populations

Hejun Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of resuscitation-promoting factor (Rpf) on the rhizoremediation efficiency of PCBs in alfalfa and rhizosphere microbiological communities. The results showed that Rpf promoted alfalfa growth in PCB-contaminated soil by improving antioxidant enzymes and detoxification metabolites. Rpf also significantly increased the removal rate of selected PCBs and enhanced the enzymatic activities of metabolizing compounds in the soil. High-throughput sequencing revealed that Rpf did not change the dominant microbial populations, but caused variations in bacterial community structures. The study suggests that Rpf can be an effective additive for improving rhizoremediation efficiency and enhancing in-situ remediation.

Enhancement of polychlorinated biphenyl biodegradation by resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) and Rpf-responsive bacterial community

Xiaomei Su et al.

Summary: Using Rpf from Micrococcus luteus can enhance the biodegradation of PCBs in contaminated environments by resuscitating and stimulating functional bacterial populations. It was found that Rpf significantly altered the composition and abundance of bacterial populations in the phylum Proteobacteria, with Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas identified as key PCB-degraders. These results suggest that Rpf has the potential to improve the efficiency of bioremediation processes in PCB-contaminated environments.

Bacterial dormancy: A subpopulation of viable but non-culturable cells demonstrates better fitness for revival

Sariqa Wagley et al.

Summary: Members of the Proteobacteria can enter a viable but non culturable (VBNC) state as a survival strategy under stressful conditions. Using Vibrio parahaemolyticus as a model organism, distinct subpopulations in the VBNC state with different resuscitation potentials and proteomic profiles were identified. Deletion of the lactate dehydrogenase gene triggered cells to enter VBNC state, while lactate addition extended resuscitation potential. The ability to survive in VBNC state may be linked to overcoming oxidative stress.

Inter- and Intra-Annual Bacterioplankton Community Patterns in a Deepwater Sub-Arctic Region: Persistent High Background Abundance of Putative Oil Degraders

Angelina G. Angelova et al.

Summary: This study assessed the spatiotemporal variability of baseline bacterioplankton community composition in the Faroe-Shetland Channel (FSC), showing significant differences in bacterioplankton communities across water samples of contrasting origin and depth. Higher-than-anticipated abundances of known hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were observed in water masses originating in the Nordic Seas, suggesting an unconfirmed source of oil input. The response of these organisms in the event of an oil spill is hindered by the low temperatures and nutrient levels typical for the FSC.

Exploitation of extracellular organic matter from Micrococcus luteus to enhance ex situ bioremediation of soils polluted with used lubricants

Attila Bodor et al.

Summary: The study showed that using extracellular organic matter (EOM) from Micrococcus luteus to enhance bioremediation of ULO pollution was effective, with a significant increase in microbial activity and degradation efficiency. High-throughput 16S rRNA analysis revealed that the enhancement was attributed to the reactivation of hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial genera and the long-term positive effect of EOM on the introduced rhodococci. Reducing ULO concentration did not necessarily correlate with decreased soil toxicity.
