L-cysteine boosted Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation: Role of L-cysteine and mechanism

Yinhao Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, L-cysteine was used to enhance the Fe(III)/peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation. The addition of L-cysteine significantly increased the degradation efficiency of the system. The role of L-cysteine in promoting sulfamethoxazole degradation was proposed and the degradation intermediates were identified. The L-cysteine/Fe(III)/PAA system showed good tolerance to Cl- and humic acid but was inhibited by HCO3-. The study provides a feasible strategy for enhancing the oxidation capacity of the Fe(III)/PAA system and an effective technique for the treatment of sulfamethoxazole in real waters.

Synergistic Cr(VI) reduction and adsorption of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) by zerovalent iron-loaded hydroxyapatite

Weichun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, zerovalent iron-loaded hydroxyapatite (ZVI/HAP) was used to simultaneously adsorb Cr(VI), Cu(II), and Co(II) in multi-metal contaminated soil. The co-existing Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) were adsorbed and precipitated onto ZVI/HAP, significantly improving the capture and reduction efficiency of Cr(VI). The application of ZVI/HAP resulted in the reduction of more than 99% of total Cr(VI) and the almost complete adsorption of Cu, Ni, and Co within 20 d.

Summary: The novel Cys-PANi@FAU-50 composite showed promising potential for effectively detoxifying Cr(VI)-bearing wastewaters, with an open mesoporous structure decorated with nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional groups. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) was well-tailored using advanced statistical physics theory, with two distinct receptor sites providing reliable microscopic and macroscopic predictions of the process. The Cr(VI) ions were adsorbed and subsequently reduced and immobilized by chelation and electrostatic interactions, showing an endothermic spontaneous process with effortless regenerability and good reusability.

Performance and mechanisms of microwave-assisted zerovalent iron/pyrite for advance remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil

Qi Li et al.

Summary: A novel approach combining microwave irradiation with zerovalent iron/pyrite (FeS2/ZVI) was developed for the efficient remediation of strongly alkaline high Cr(VI) contaminated soil. The results showed that microwave irradiation-assisted FeS2/ZVI achieved rapid and efficient removal of Cr(VI) from the soil, with a 99.9% removal rate within 10 minutes, and a decrease in Cr(VI) concentration from 3900.8 to 2.38 mg kg(-1). The study also demonstrated that microwave irradiation promoted the transformation of reduced Cr(III) into stable FeCr2O4 mineral, and the remediated soil exhibited excellent long-term stability.

Dual functional sites strategies toward enhanced heavy metal remediation: Interlayer expanded Mg-Al layered double hydroxide by intercalation with L-cysteine

Danyang Wang et al.

Summary: The discharge of toxic heavy metals is a serious threat to both human health and the environment. However, current water purification systems lack effective materials for the rapid, efficient, and cost-effective remediation of these toxic heavy metals. In this study, a new adsorbent called L-cysteine (Cys) intercalated Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH/Cys) was developed for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II). This material has a loose lamellar porous structure and, thanks to the intercalation of Cys, it has both increased diffusion of heavy metals and additional capture sites. As a result, MgAl-LDH/Cys exhibited significantly higher sorption capacity and faster sorption kinetics compared to pristine MgAl-LDH. These findings suggest that MgAl-LDH/Cys has great potential for practical applications in heavy metal remediation.

Y. Vicente-Martinez et al.

Summary: A novel method using magnetic core nanoparticles, coated with metallic nanomeric silver and functionalized with L-Cysteine, has been introduced for the total and simultaneous removal of various mercury species from aquatic environments. The experimental results show high adsorption efficiency within a short contact time, along with the ability to recover and reuse the nanoparticles. The thermodynamics reveal that the adsorption is of a physicochemical nature, and the equilibrium isotherms are described by a Langmuir model for all the Hg species.
