Allelopathic effect of pyrogallic acid on cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa: The regulatory role of nitric oxide and its significance for controlling harmful algal blooms (HABs)

Yan He et al.

Summary: Utilizing allelochemicals to inhibit the excessive growth of toxic cyanobacteria is considered an environmentally friendly method. However, the regulatory role of the signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) on cyanobacteria under allelopathic stress is still unknown. This study found that the effect of NO on Microcystis aeruginosa depends on the concentration of pyrogallic acid (PA), with lower concentrations stimulating growth and higher concentrations inhibiting it. The study also demonstrated the involvement of NO in modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintaining redox homeostasis in M. aeruginosa.

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of Microcystis aeruginosa exposed to artemisinin sustained-release microspheres

Cunhao Du et al.

Summary: The study reveals the toxic mechanism of Artemisinin sustained-release microspheres (ASMs) on Microcystis aeruginosa. ASMs inhibit photosynthesis by blocking pigment synthesis, destroying photoreaction centers, and disrupting carbon reactions. They also reduce L-glutamic acid content, block glutathione synthesis, disrupt nitrogen metabolism and hinder the synthesis of various amino acids. This study provides important insights for the practical application of ASMs and the management of harmful algal blooms.

Effect of butachlor on Microcystis aeruginosa: Cellular and molecular mechanisms of toxicity

Jing Yu et al.

Summary: The rapid development of agriculture has led to increased release of butachlor into aquatic environments. Butachlor has significant toxic effects on the growth, physiology, and molecular mechanisms of Microcystis aeruginosa, a dominant species causing cyanobacterial blooms. Low concentrations of butachlor showed no significant changes, indicating a high tolerance in Microcystis aeruginosa. However, high concentrations of butachlor resulted in inhibition of photosynthetic activity, disruption of cell ultrastructure, oxidative stress, and elevated extracellular microcystin-LR concentration.

Summary: In natural water bodies, cyanobacteria have the potential to produce cyanotoxins, particularly microcystin (MC), which is known to be carcinogenic. MC synthesis is a complex process influenced by various biotic and abiotic factors. Understanding these factors is crucial for effective reduction of MC production.

Summary: The simplest beta-diketone, acetylacetone, is found to be a promising specific cyanocide, targeting bound iron species in the photosynthetic electron transport chain of Microcystis aeruginosa. This targeted binding approach outperforms the general oxidation mechanism in terms of specificity and eco-safety, providing a unique solution for the selective control of cyanobacteria.
