Multiple perspectives reveal the gut toxicity of polystyrene microplastics on Eisenia fetida: Insights into community signatures of gut bacteria and their translocation

Tongtong Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) had toxic effects on the gut of the earthworm Eisenia fetida, including damage to the gut barrier, bacterial translocation, and pathogen invasion. Exposure to PS-MPs led to increased levels of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and gut bacterial load, triggering antibacterial immune responses and compromising the antioxidant defense system. The exposure also simplified the gut bacterial networks but increased negative interactions.

Summary: This study investigated the nitrate reducers and their role in the iron biochemical cycling. It was found that iron(II) oxidation involves both enzymatic and abiotic reactions, with a portion of oxidized iron(II) coupled to microbial nitrate reduction. The presence of heavy iron(III) encrustation on the cell surface suggests the occurrence of periplasmic iron(III) oxide precipitation and surface iron(II) mineral coating for nitrate reducers.
