This study aims to report a bi-centric experience with robotic left colectomy to help define its role. The study compared patients undergoing robotic left colectomy or laparoscopic left colectomy and found comparable conversion rates and morbidity between the two approaches, though operative time was longer with the robotic approach.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to analyze the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic and robotic surgery in upper rectum, sigmoid, and left colon resection and anastomosis, and to compare the short-term differences between these two approaches. The results showed that both laparoscopic and robotic intracorporeal resection and anastomosis were feasible and safe, and achieved similar surgical, postoperative, and pathological outcomes as described in the literature. However, there seemed to be more complications in the laparoscopic group.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent laparoscopic left hemicolectomy and compared the short- and medium-term outcomes between intracorporeal anastomosis (IA) and extracorporeal anastomosis (EA). The results showed that IA had better short-term outcomes, including shorter hospital stays and faster recovery of bowel function. In terms of medium-term outcomes, the overall survival and disease-free survival rates were comparable between IA and EA procedures.

However, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of hospital stay, operative time, lymph nodes harvested, anastomotic leak, postoperative ileus, reoperation, readmission within 30 days, and death.
