Interval dynamics of transplantability for hepatocellular carcinoma after primary curative resection: risk factors for nontransplantable recurrence

Hou-Ying Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in transplantability between primary and recurrent Hepato-cellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatic resection (HR) and identified risk factors for nontransplantable recurrence (NTR). The study found that tumor diameter, resection extent, pathological grade, microvascular invasion, and early recurrence were associated with NTR. The overall transplantable pool increased after HR, suggesting that liver transplantation may not be necessary for some patients.

Towards a new definition of decompensated cirrhosis

Gennaro D'Amico et al.

Summary: There is a consensus that clinical complications indicate the transition from compensated to decompensated cirrhosis. Decompensation significantly worsens patient prognosis and is a key factor in predicting mortality. Decompensated cirrhosis can follow two distinct pathways: acute and non-acute, with acute decompensation often representing further deterioration.

Improved prognosis of hepatitis C-related hepatocellular carcinoma in the era of direct-acting antivirals

Tsuyoshi Fukumoto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prognosis of hepatitis C-related hepatocellular carcinoma (C-HCC) in the era of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). The results showed a significant improvement in the prognosis of C-HCC with the advent of DAAs, while the prognosis of nonviral HCC did not improve significantly.

The Impact of Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy on the Risk of Recurrence after Curative Resection in Patients with Hepatitis-C-Virus-Related Early Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Yu-Syuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that DAA treatment could reduce the risk of recurrence in patients with early stage HCV-related HCC. Liver cirrhosis, microvascular invasion, and high AFP levels were identified as independent factors for HCC recurrence.

Direct-acting antivirals improve survival and recurrence rates after treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma within the Milan criteria

Hironori Ochi et al.

Summary: DAAs treatment after HCC can prevent hepatic functional reserve deterioration and significantly improve both recurrence and survival rates. This study showed that in patients receiving DAAs treatment, the 48-month survival rate was 91.0% and the recurrence rate was 36.7%, both significantly better than in patients not receiving DAAs treatment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Survival After Treatable Hepatocellular Carcinoma Recurrence in Liver Recipients: A Nationwide Cohort Analysis

Cheng-Maw Ho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the survival of patients with post-transplant HCC recurrence, finding that early recurrence within two years after surgery had a poorer prognosis compared to late recurrence. Factors such as transplant era before 2008 and radiofrequency ablation were associated with better outcomes, while receiving sorafenib and radiotherapy were linked to poorer prognosis.

Summary: The introduction of novel and highly effective direct-acting antiviral drugs has revolutionized the treatment of HCV by curing a broad range of patients, including those with established advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, comorbidities, and complications. Fibrosis is a dynamic process involving both extracellular matrix deposition and degradation.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma Recurrence after Hepatitis C Virus Therapy with Direct-Acting Antivirals. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Leonardo Frazzoni et al.

Summary: Research shows that approximately 30% of patients with a history of HCC will experience HCC recurrence after receiving DAA treatment, with the risk of recurrence higher soon after treatment ends. Studies from Europe, the United States, Egypt, and Asia show variations in recurrence rates, but overall, DAA treatment seems to lower the risk of HCC recurrence compared to IFN and no intervention.
