Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology consensus statement on metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease

Wah-Kheong Chan et al.

Summary: The Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has developed a consensus statement on metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) to provide guidelines for the management and treatment of the disease, including cardiovascular risk assessment, medication options, surgical interventions, and screening for complications.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease improves detection of high liver stiffness: The Rotterdam Study

Laurens A. van Kleef et al.

Summary: Research on a large population found that metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is more strongly associated with liver disease progression, including fibrosis and higher liver stiffness, while non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) shows no significant correlation with these indicators.

Epidemiological trends of gastrointestinal and liver diseases in Malaysia: A single-center observational study

Sze Zee Lim et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed outpatient data from a specialist clinic and found that there are differences in the prevalence of gastrointestinal and liver diseases among different ethnic groups. Indian patients were more likely to be diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, while Malay and Indian patients had a higher prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Asian perspective on NAFLD-associated HCC

Terry Cheuk-Fung Yip et al.

Summary: Recent data shows that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a significant public health issue in Asia, with a population prevalence of 34%. The rising trend of NAFLD also leads to an increase in NAFLD-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review focuses on the changing epidemiology of HCC in Asia over the past 30 years, highlighting the importance of traditional risk factors and specific genetic polymorphism in East Asia. Additionally, non-obese individuals with NAFLD are commonly observed in Asia.

The Need for Alternatives to Liver Biopsies: Non-Invasive Analytics and Diagnostics

James Neuberger et al.

Summary: Histology is essential for the diagnosis and management of many liver disorders, despite the risks and costs associated with the biopsy procedure. New techniques are changing the indications for liver biopsy. While serological and radiological techniques can be used for diagnosing and managing many liver diseases, they also have limitations.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Global Perspective

Wei-Kei Wong et al.

Summary: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly increasing in Asia, reaching levels similar to the Western world. Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk for NAFLD and severe liver disease, emphasizing the need for screening and treatment. The impact of multiple genes and metabolic dysfunction in NAFLD is becoming a key research focus.

Attenuation parameter and liver stiffness measurement using FibroTouch vs Fibroscan in patients with chronic liver disease

Ying Zhuang Ng et al.

Summary: The study found strong correlation between FT and FS examination results in terms of attenuation parameter and liver stiffness measurement, with significant differences in absolute values, consistency, examination time, and number of invalid measurements. FT had shorter examination time and fewer invalid measurements compared to FS, indicating that either device can be used by healthcare personnel of different backgrounds after sufficient training.
