Oncotherapeutic Strategies in Early Onset Colorectal Cancer

Mary O'Reilly et al.

Summary: Early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), defined as colorectal cancers in patients aged less than 50 years, is becoming an increasingly common issue globally. The incidence of EOCRC has been rising by 2% annually since 1994. Patients with EOCRC have distinct social, spiritual, fertility, and financial needs that need to be addressed. This review discusses the risk factors and management strategies for EOCRC.

Colonoscopic Screening and Risk of All-Cause and Colorectal Cancer Mortality in Young and Older Individuals

Jung Ah Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of colonoscopy screening on all-cause and CRC mortality in individuals under 45 years old and those 45 years and older. The results showed that colonoscopy screening was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in both age groups, and significantly reduced CRC mortality in individuals aged 45 years and older. Therefore, more rigorous confirmatory studies are needed to validate the benefits of early screening in reducing mortality.

Early-onset colorectal cancer: A review of current knowledge

Margarida R. Saraiva et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy worldwide, with decreasing incidence in individuals above 50 years old but increasing incidence in those below 50 years old. This early-onset CRC presents unique features and is predicted to double by 2030, making it a serious public health issue. Modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors have been identified, and the genetic risk evaluation is recommended for accurate assessment. Screening strategies and considerations for young cancer patients are discussed.

Early-onset colorectal cancer: Current insights and future directions

Claudia Wing-Kwan Wu et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) worldwide, but the reasons behind this trend remain unclear. EOCRC appears to have distinct clinical and molecular characteristics when compared to late-onset colorectal cancer, with younger patients often presenting with tumors located in the distal or rectal area, advanced stages of the disease, and unfavorable histological features. Identifying risk factors for EOCRC is crucial in addressing the growing burden of this disease.

Significant Rise of Colorectal Cancer Incidence in Younger Adults and Strong Determinants: 30 Years Longitudinal Differences between under and over 50s

Dimitra Sifaki-Pistolla et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Crete and found an increasing trend among individuals under 50 years old. The study also identified smoking, alcohol consumption, and farming occupation as major risk factors. Based on the observed trends, the researchers suggested that earlier CRC screening may be necessary.

Colorectal Cancer Epidemiology: Recent Trends and Impact on Outcomes

Firas Baidoun et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, with significant epidemiological variations between regions, age, gender, and racial groups. Various factors such as risk factor exposure, demographic variations, genetic susceptibility, and genetic mutations play a role in these differences. In this mini-review, recent trends in the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer globally are discussed, along with the factors influencing these trends.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths, with high incidence in adults aged 65 to 74. Screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 75 with substantial net benefit, for those aged 45 to 49 with moderate net benefit, and selective screening is advised for adults aged 76 to 85.
